Liverpool lost out on penalties on Sunday

Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool to invest in a striker before the transfer window ends after Liverpool lost the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

During the transfer window, both Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez both left to go to new clubs. Diaz has joined Bayern Munich, while Nunez has made his move to Al-Hilal.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but the Magpies are not willing to let him go without a fight.

The Reds were able to score twice within the first 21 minutes of the game, but were unable to find a winner and ultimately lost in a brilliant display from Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, leaving the Liverpool defender furious.

"I hate losing and I've lost my last two games at Wembley," said Van Dijk.

The defender continued: “Well, we just lost Darwin, He went to Saudi and we lost Lucho, obviously he went to Bayern. I think there's always room for an attacker in order to strengthen us so let's see what the window brings in terms of the balance of the team."

Two of Liverpool’s new signings were the goal scorers at Wembley, as Hugo Ekitike slotted home a finish in the bottom corner, while Jeremie Frimpong’s cross sailed over Henderson’s head to give Liverpool the lead again, but a penalty levelled things back up with no team able to break the deadlock.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot seems to disagree with his defender, as he believes: "I think we have more than more than enough [attacking] options to be good enough to win again. This is where I focus on myself.

"With the players we have, we should be able to win, to score. That's actually what we did as well. We scored twice and last season we only scored one against them, away and at home. We could only score one against them.

"So my last concern at the moment is our offensive quality. It's more... it's not a concern, but if I look at the amount of goals we've conceded in pre-season, that's not of our standard,” he revealed.

Van Dijk was also on the pitch for the Carabao Cup final last season, which saw Alexander Isak score in the 2-1 win for the Magpies, while not explicitly stated the Dutch defender may have been hinting at his hopes of getting Isak to join Liverpool.

Liverpool are still waiting on a sign to enter a second bid, after their dizzying £110million offer was rejected earlier this month.

Slot did take aim at his defence for the loss on Sunday: "Last season, it was about keeping a clean sheet and attack as much as we could, and then create a few chances. Now we are able to create more.

"But we are conceding more at the moment as well. And if you want to compete to win the league, one of the main things is not conceding chances, let alone goals.

"I don’t think we conceded a lot today but too much to win the game,” the manager bemoaned.

Liverpool will not have long to turn around their defensive struggles as they play their opening game of the new Premier League season on Friday when they face Bournemouth.
