The match in north London ended 2-2 on Saturday

James Maddison was left visibly unimpressed after a jubilant celebration from YouTuber Morgan Burtwistle, known online as Angry Ginge, during Tottenham’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

The injured Tottenham midfielder was watching from the stands when Matthijs de Ligt’s 96th minute header denied Spurs what had appeared to be a remarkable comeback victory.

The moment sparked an awkward exchange between the pair, who have been friends for almost two years.

Maddison, currently sidelined with a long term knee injury, watched on from the club’s hospitality seating area alongside Burtwistle, a vocal United supporter.

The match appeared to have swung decisively in Tottenham’s favour late on, with Mathys Tel cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener before Richarlison struck in stoppage time to send the stadium into full celebration.

Tottenham fans around Maddison were on their feet and the playmaker punched the air in delight, while Burtwistle sat with his eyes closed in frustration.

The dynamic changed moments later, however. As the clock moved past the fifth minute of added time, De Ligt rose to meet a looping cross and directed his header beyond the Tottenham goalkeeper.

What had been an atmosphere of celebration among the home crowd dissolved into stunned silence.

In contrast, Burtwistle exploded from his seat. He shouted in triumph, lifted his phone and began recording himself celebrating directly beside Maddison.

Video from supporters in nearby rows shows Burtwistle leaning close to his friend's face as he revelled in the dramatic equaliser.

Maddison did not join in the mood. Remaining seated while clearly unhappy at the late concession, he raised his arm to push Burtwistle’s hand down, moving the phone away.

The gesture was not aggressive but there was no ambiguity in the frustration, with the pair exchanging a brief look before the Tottenham star turned his attention back to the pitch.

Supporters filming nearby captured the moment, which quickly circulated on social media.

The exchange concluded more amicably. When the final whistle sounded, Maddison stood and offered a handshake, which Burtwistle accepted.

Both appeared calm as they left their seats. The two have known each other since collaborating on an EA FC Mobile promotional video nearly two years ago and have been seen attending matches and events together since.

While the incident provided a moment of levity to a dramatic fixture, it also underlined Maddison’s ongoing frustration with having to watch rather than influence events on the pitch.

The 28-year-old has not featured at all this season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in a pre-season match in early August.

His rehabilitation remains in its early stages and Tottenham have been reluctant to place a definitive date on his return.

Maddison has been a central figure for Spurs since his arrival from Leicester City, and his absence has been keenly felt as the club have attempted to maintain momentum in a highly competitive Premier League campaign.

Meanwhile, the result means both Spurs and United remain level on points with 18 each to their name.

Tottenham will return to action on November 24 when they face Arsenal in an explosive north London derby.

As for United, they'll face Everton the following day (8pm).
