England manager Thomas Tuchel has signed a new contract, keeping him in the role until the end of Euro 2028.

The 52-year-old is taking the Three Lions over the Atlantic in the hope of returning from the 2026 World Cup victorious.

When the German replaced Sir Gareth Southgate at the beginning of last year, many believed the appointment was made to achieve instant success, with his tenure at threat if he failed to win the upcoming tournament.

Now, however, the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss will remain at the helm for a second major tournament.

The new deal was confirmed on Thursday morning before the 2026-27 Nations League draw.

Tuchel will now be in charge for Euro 2026, hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with the semi-finals and final at Wembley Stadium.

His initial contract, which he signed in October 2024 before taking charge in January 2025, expires at the end of the World Cup in North America.

No further details about the contract have yet been revealed.

He said: "I’m very pleased. It was me in the beginning that wanted a short-term contract only for 18 months because I was not sure what’s coming in international football; how fast can I adapt and what is the job all about?

"But very soon, I fell in love with the job and the role, and I was from the first day very committed and very proud.

"Now, I feel in the last half-year, especially what we’re building and the spirit growing and creating a special bond between the players and having extraordinary results.

"It’s just a pleasure to extend and try to complete the full cycle of two tournaments."

Tuchel's decision appears to rule out the prospect of him managing Manchester United despite being heavily rumoured for the role.

The Red Devils appointed Michael Carrick on an intern basis after sacking Ruben Amorim at the beginning of last month.

Real Madrid have also been linked with the German following the sacking of Xabi Alonso.

Tuchel is also among the names floated by Tottenham fans for their next permanent manager; however, the 52-year-old is understood to favour Manchester United over the North London side if he wishes to return to club football.

Tuchel earned elite status as a manager after success at Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, winning the Champions League, the Super Cup, the Club World Cup, and multiple domestic league titles.

Now he leads England into the World Cup, with their fixtures already revealed in December in the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington DC.

The Three Lions were drawn into group L alongside Croatia, Panama and Ghana.

England's opening game will be against Croatia, whom they lost to in the 2018 semi-final.

The 2026 World Cup introduces a new 48-team format, expanding from the traditional 32-team structure used since 1998.

Instead of eight groups of four, the tournament will now feature 12 groups of four teams, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a much larger Round of 32.

This replaces the old system, which advanced directly to the Round of 16.

As a result, the competition grows from 64 to 104 matches, making it the biggest World Cup ever.
