The World Cup this summer will see some matches played late into the night

Football fans across England have something to cheer about ahead of this summer's World Cup in North America.

The Government has given the green light for pubs to keep serving drinks until the early hours during the tournament's later stages.

Treasury Minister Dan Tomlinson made the announcement, with opening hours extended to either 1am or 2am depending on when matches kick off.

He said: "I can also announce today that pubs and other license venues will be able to open until 1am or 2am depending on when the game starts for home nation games in the later stages of the men's football World Cup."

Tomlinson described pubs as a "cornerstone" of communities throughout the UK.

The extended licensing hours are tied directly to match schedules, which could see games running deep into the night.

Should England progress beyond the group stage, some knockout fixtures could finish as late as 2am UK time.

This is particularly relevant for matches that go to extra time during the round of 32 stage.

If the Three Lions finish second in their group, they would play at 11pm on July 2, while a third-place finish would mean an 11pm kick-off on July 3.

Either of these ties could stretch well past midnight if the scores remain level after 90 minutes.

Thomas Tuchel's squad will begin their campaign against Croatia on June 17, with a 9pm kick-off at the AT&T Stadium.

Ghana follows on June 23, also at 9pm, before England round off Group L against Panama at 10pm on June 27.

The Three Lions faced both Croatia and Panama at the 2018 World Cup, so there's some familiar opposition waiting.

Winning the group would set up a more favourable 5pm kick-off on July 1 for the round of 32.

Should England advance further, they could potentially meet co-hosts Mexico in the last 16 in Mexico City.

Thousands of England supporters hoping to travel to North America are facing eye-watering costs for what's shaping up to be the priciest World Cup ever.

Hotel rooms in cities hosting Three Lions matches, including Dallas, Boston and New York, are averaging up to £437 per night.

Flight prices have also shot up dramatically, with direct returns to New York reaching £482 for the group stage period.

Costs jumped by an average of 55 per cent in England's group stage host cities after the fixtures were announced.

Mexico City, a potential last 16 venue, saw prices double as fans scrambled to book.
