The Spurs manager accepted the criticism but urged them to recognise the defensive solidity

Tottenham supporters vented their frustration during last night's goalless stalemate away at Brentford, booing their team at both half-time and full-time as Thomas Frank made his return to the Gtech Community Stadium

The away fans delivered a damning verdict on their side's performance by chanting "boring, boring Tottenham" late in the second half.

Frank departed the Bees in the summer following six-and-a-half years at the helm, and had secured a 2-0 victory over his former employers just 26 days earlier.

Spurs struggled to threaten going forward in west London, with supporters also singing the names of departed favourites including Dele, Moussa Dembele, Eric Dier and former manager Martin Jol.

The Spurs manager accepted the criticism from travelling supporters but urged them to recognise the defensive solidity his side demonstrated against opponents who have claimed points from Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle at home this season.

Frank said: "They were not too satisfied and it's fair when we don't hit that top performance overall, but I think it's double-sided because we need to acknowledge the defensive side of the game, which we've done excellent today against a team that scored three against Liverpool and Man United."

He conceded the attacking output must improve.

The manager added: "I am confident we will make it fluent and better and score enough goals."

The opening period produced little excitement.

Kevin Schade saw a fifth-minute tap-in chalked off for offside while Nathan Collins blocked Archie Gray's header towards goal.

Brentford posed the greater threat after the interval.

Spurs captain Cristian Romero was fortunate to avoid dismissal following a last-man challenge on Igor Thiago, having missed his clearance before handling the ball.

The hosts squandered several opportunities to claim all three points, with Keane Lewis-Potter failing to connect properly when well positioned in the area and Thiago blazing over from close range.

Vitaly Janelt's header drew a fine stop from Guglielmo Vicario as Tottenham clung on.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews was adamant that Romero should have received his marching orders for the challenge on Thiago.

Andrews said: "I've had a very clear look at it. I thought it was a red card."

The manager added: "What makes it even more frustrating is he should have had a red card in the first game, 26 days ago, when he scissored Thiago from behind, which was a dangerous tackle.

"I felt Spurs were very lucky with that today."

Frank pointed to absentees affecting his side's creativity, with Xavi Simons serving a three-match suspension and Lucas Bergvall injured at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Dominic Solanke could return this month, while the club remains active in the transfer market.
