The draw extends Sunderland's remarkable unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light to 10 matches this campaign

Manchester City's title aspirations suffered a setback on Thursday evening as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw at the Stadium of Light.

The result leaves Pep Guardiola's side trailing Arsenal by four points in the Premier League standings, handing the Gunners a significant advantage in the championship race.

Arsenal had already strengthened their position with a commanding 4-1 demolition of Aston Villa earlier in the week, piling pressure on City to respond.

The visitors' clearest opportunity fell to Erling Haaland, who fired directly at Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs from twelve yards out during the opening period.

Bernardo Silva thought he had given City an early lead within six minutes when he converted from close range following a Haaland flick-on, but the effort was chalked off for offside.

The Norwegian striker's frustration was evident throughout as the Black Cats' stubborn resistance denied him any clear sight of goal.

Sunderland's rearguard action proved exceptional, with centre-backs Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele keeping Haaland firmly in check throughout the contest.

Roefs was in inspired form between the posts, producing impressive stops to thwart both Savinho and substitute Josko Gvardiol after the break.

Mukiele demonstrated remarkable commitment when he blocked a Jeremy Doku strike with his face, epitomising the hosts' determination to preserve their clean sheet.

The Black Cats were not merely content to defend, however, creating opportunities of their own that tested Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Brian Brobbey muscled past Ruben Dias to reach a long ball but could only direct his effort straight at the Italian goalkeeper.

Simon Adingra and Eliezer Mayenda also forced Donnarumma into action, with the City stopper required to claw away Mayenda's low drive.

Trai Hume came close when his glancing header drifted narrowly over the crossbar just before half-time.

Guardiola turned to his bench in search of a breakthrough, introducing the returning Rodri at the interval.

Doku and Gvardiol were also brought from the bench as City seized control of proceedings.

The Croatian defender came closest to breaking the deadlock, rattling the outside of the post with an acrobatic attempt before seeing a close-range effort heroically blocked in the dying minutes.

Tijani Reijders had the final opportunity deep into stoppage time but fired straight at Roefs, leaving Haaland visibly furious that his teammate had opted to shoot rather than pass.

Despite City's sustained pressure throughout the second period, Regis Le Bris's side held firm to secure a deserved point.

The draw extends Sunderland's remarkable unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light to 10 matches this campaign, underlining their credentials as formidable opponents on home soil.
