Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to Rangers - and his wife Alex Curran has played a major role.

The Liverpool legend was one of the frontrunners to take the reins at Ibrox after a disappointing campaign that saw Philippe Clement sacked.

Especially after shareholder Dave King revealed that Gerrard 'had unfinished business' at the club following the former England international's success in the job in 2021.

That year, Gerrard led Rangers to Scottish Premiership glory - pipping Celtic to the title before joining Aston Villa months later.

He said: “From Steven’s point of view and where he is at the moment, I think he’d love nothing more than to come back and take on the challenge of restoring the club.

“It’s not just about one title. The project we hope we’re starting is to make Rangers the dominant No 1 team in Scotland."

But according to the Daily Record, Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to Rangers and become their new manager.

That is largely down to the fact his wife and family do not want to move to Scotland, having just settled in the Middle East.

They want to stay there for at least a year in what has been described as a 'lifestyle choice'.

The report also goes on to stress that that it is not to do with a potential huge tax bill that Gerrard could face should he return to the United Kingdom.

Gerrard left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq on Janury 29 earlier this year by mutual consent.

That came after joining the club as manager in July 2023, signing a contract extension until 2027 a year later before the decision was made to part ways.

Rangers' search for a new manager continues, with former Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti, ex-Feyenoord boss Brian Priske and former Southampton boss Russell Martin all in the running.

Multiple reports indicate that Ancelotti, who is the son of legendary boss Carlo Ancelotti, is the preferred choice and a move could be completed by next week.

Ancelotti has been the assistant manager to his father at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Napoli but wants to take the next step into a role of his own.
