Emma Raducanu was knocked out of the French Open by Iga Swiatek

Emma Raducanu suffered a comprehensive defeat at the French Open, losing 6-1, 6-2 to defending champion Iga Swiatek in the second round.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old has still earned herself a decent chunk in prize money after her first-round win over China's Wang Xinyu.

The British number two was thoroughly outplayed by the Polish fifth seed in a match lasting just 79 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

This latest setback extends Raducanu's losing streak against Swiatek to five matches, with the 22-year-old former US Open champion yet to win a single set against the four-time Roland Garros winner.

The world number 41 simply could not keep up with Swiatek's relentless groundstrokes and superior clay court expertise.

Swiatek's dominance was evident in the statistics, with the Pole hitting 31 winners compared to just eight from Raducanu.

The British player failed to convert any of her four break points during the encounter, as the two shared a 'cold' moment after the contest finished.

Despite the disappointing result, Raducanu earned £98,000 for her first-round victory over Wang.

The prize money represents a significant sum, though it pales compared to her career earnings of more than $5 million since her stunning 2021 US Open triumph.

Raducanu has struggled to replicate that breakthrough success, failing to reach the last 16 in any of the other three grand slams.

Her part-time coach Mark Petchey was present in her player box after missing her opening win due to television commitments.

Petchey had recently made adjustments to her racquet weight and service action ahead of the tournament.

Swiatek's victory extends her remarkable Roland Garros winning streak to 23 matches, demonstrating her continued dominance on the Parisian clay despite recent challenges.

Speaking after the win, the 23-year-old said: "I'm not focusing on that [making it look easy]. I just want to play my game.

"I felt good on court for sure, so I felt I could do whatever I had planned to do or whatever I wanted to do.

"I just had to adjust to the wind because the conditions were pretty tricky today. I'm happy that I did that well and I'm through [to the next round]."

The former world number one has faced significant setbacks, including a month-long ban last year after testing positive for a banned substance and the loss of her grandfather before the Madrid Masters.

Playing with her lowest seeding at a grand slam since the 2022 Australian Open, Swiatek showed she remains a formidable contender for the title.

Her ruthless dismantling of Raducanu proved the Queen of Clay has found her old French Open form when it matters most.
