The South Korean is leaving the club after 10 years

Los Angeles FC are expected to shatter Major League Soccer's transfer record by securing Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son for $27million (£20million).

The South Korean forward's move to California surpasses the previous MLS benchmark of $22million that Atlanta United paid for Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesborough earlier this year.

The 33-year-old was spotted at the BMO Stadium last night to watch LAFC's game against Tigres, with a medical expected to have taken place.

The deal represents a significant statement of intent from LAFC, who have invested heavily to bring one of Asian football's most celebrated players to America.

During an emotional press conference before the Newcastle friendly, Son revealed his departure decision, stating: "It was the most difficult decision of my football career.

"I've been here 10 years at a beautiful club with beautiful fans and having such amazing memories.

"I feel like I need a new environment and to push myself. And to get more of me, I feel like I need a little bit of change."

Son's remarkable Spurs legacy includes 454 competitive matches and 173 goals, placing him seventh in the club's all-time appearance rankings.

His 127 Premier League goals position him 16th among the competition's highest scorers, surpassing legends like Robbie Keane and Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink.

The South Korean's tenure culminated with Tottenham's Europa League victory in May, delivering the club's first piece of silverware in 17 years.

Son's transfer reunites him with former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who joined LAFC last year.

As the most valuable MLS side, LAFC have both commercial power and a trophy cabinet. Boasting a history of players such as Gareth Bale, Carlos Vela and Olivier Giroud, the Californian side have won two Supporters’ Shields, the US Open Cup and the MLS Cup since their inaugural season in 2018.

Los Angeles also boasts the largest Korean population outside Korea, with the city's bustling Koreatown situated mere miles from LAFC's BMO Stadium.

The forward made his first appearance at the home stadium on Tuesday evening, watching LAFC's Leagues Cup game from a luxury box.

At 33, Son remains younger than several recent MLS arrivals including Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Marco Reus, who were all 35 or older when joining American clubs.

The forward has confirmed his intention to represent South Korea at the 2026 World Cup in North America, which would mark his fourth tournament appearance.
