Manchester United co-owner revealed he would like to keep the Portuguese as boss for three years just yesterday

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has been hit with two brutal digs by fellow managers within the first week of the international break.

The comments come just days after United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe revealed in an interview he would like the Portuguese to see out his contract at the club, which runs until 2027.

Rasmus Hojlund was one member of the squad who was forced out by Amorim this summer. The 40-year-old did not see a fit for him in his system; instead forking out £73million for the services of Benjamin Sesko to replace him. The new striker has already scored two league goals.

But the Dane has started the season in scintillating form, hitting the net four times for new club Napoli in his opening six games - he scored four Premier League goals last year - while grabbing another three in as many games in his nation’s World Cup qualifiers.

Denmark demolished Belarus 6-0 last night, with the former United striker getting on the scoresheet twice, prompting a strong reaction from boss Brian Riemer, who believes Hojlund had more than enough quality to succeed in the Premier League.

“I think Rasmus has the quality for both leagues, without discussion,” he said after the game.

“Does he fit in Italian football? Yes. There was no doubt about that, because he had already proven that. But that doesn't mean he doesn't fit in English football. On the contrary, I would almost say.

“The fact that he is now on a well-functioning team and has players around him who take pride in doing good for others helps to make the outcome for a striker like Rasmus, who needs to be serviced.

“It is more important than which league you play in.”

Hojlund’s impressive start to life in Naples suggests Amorim could have been rash in his decision to offload the striker.

Having said that, it did not click for the Dane at Old Trafford. He scored just 26 goals in 95 appearances for the Red Devils during his two seasons.

Elsewhere, Manchester United Women’s manager Marc Skinner also took a sly swipe at Amorim.

In a start to the season that has had its ups and downs, the lowest of all for United most likely came in their humiliating defeat to League Two Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.

Amorim’s side came back from a two-goal deficit to draw the game in normal time, only to lose the tie on penalties.

During the shoot-out, the United boss could be seen with his head to the floor, refusing to look up to watch the penalties and instead feeding off crowd reaction. He has also been seen to do this when skipper Bruno Fernandes has stepped up in the Premier League this season.

And during his side’s 1-0 Champions League victory against Norwegian outfit Valerenga on Wednesday, in which Maya Le Tissier won the game for the hosts from the spot, Skinner claimed he is “not one of those managers” who look away for penalties.

“When she steps up for a penalty, I feel confident. I absolutely do,” he revealed.

“I’m not one of these managers that look away - you're at the mercy of technique not whether the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.

“I think it's technique and composure and it's mental acumen that I spoke about earlier. She practises them, she's calm with them and I trust her technique 100 per cent.”

Amorim has also been receiving pelters in the media recently from former players who have slammed his tenure at the club, which will reach its one-year mark next month.

Wayne Rooney went on record on his BBC podcast admitting he has “no faith” that Amorim will be able to turn his situation around, while Gary Neville criticised the boss’s strict stubbornness over his 3-4-3 formation.

Jamie Carragher has also previously described his tenure as "a disaster”, claiming his departure is “inevitable”.

Despite this, United have recorded three successive home victories in the league this season, and Amorim will be looking to build on their form at Old Trafford to create some momentum moving forward and silence his doubters. They travel to Anfield in their next Premier League fixture following the international break.
