Ruben Amorim delivered a remarkable outburst following Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday, where he strongly suggested he would leave the club when his current contract expires.

The 40-year-old Portuguese is under contract with Old Trafford until the summer of 2027.

Amorim said: "I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear.

"I know that my name is not Tuchel, it's not Conte, it's not Mourinho, but I'm the manager of Manchester United."

Amorim strongly indicated he intends to depart Old Trafford when his current deal concludes in the summer of 2027.

He said: "It's going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change. That was my point, I want to finish with that. I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until the other guy is coming here to replace me."

The Portuguese repeated his position multiple times during the press conference, emphasising that his departure timeline was predetermined.

He added: "I just want to say that I'm going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. And I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal."

Amorim also called out other departments within the club, insisting they must fulfil their responsibilities.

He said: "Every department, the scouting department, the sporting director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on."

The United boss referenced criticism from Sky Sports pundit and former club captain Gary Neville, suggesting the organisation needs to develop thicker skin.

Amorim said: "If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles, the criticism of everything, we need to change the club."

Director of football Jason Wilcox speaks daily with Amorim, and the pair have previously discussed tactical formations.

Wilcox is understood to favour the 4-3-3 system that brought Manchester City their domestic dominance.

The explosive press conference followed days of mounting tension behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Amorim had hinted at problems during his Friday media duties, where he remained tight-lipped about transfer window activity.

Over the Christmas period, the Portuguese made cryptic remarks about January recruitment, saying he was "starting to understand" that significant spending would not materialise and he might need to adapt.

There has also been pressure on Amorim to alter his preferred 3-4-3 formation, which he persisted with against Leeds despite deploying a 4-2-3-1 in the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle.

United climbed to fifth in the Premier League following the Elland Road stalemate, but have managed just a single victory from their previous five matches.

They face Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
