Amber alerts for snow are also in place across several parts of Scotland

Freezing temperatures have wreaked havoc across English football today, forcing the cancellation of 16 EFL games across the weekend, including every scheduled 3pm League Two fixture.

The cold snap, as temperatures could drop to as low as -10C in parts of the country, has left pitches unplayable despite groundstaff efforts throughout the weekend.

Cambridge versus Grimsby became the final League Two match to fall victim to the freeze, with the decision made at midday.

Championship and League One fixtures have also been affected, with multiple games called off following morning pitch inspections that deemed surfaces unsafe for play.

The disruption follows four National League postponements yesterday.

Sheffield United's home clash with Oxford United was the first Championship fixture to be postponed, with the referee ruling parts of Bramall Lane's pitch frozen.

The decision left supporters bewildered, with fans questioning whether undersoil heating had been switched on.

Portsmouth's meeting with Ipswich Town was also cancelled following an 11am inspection at Fratton Park.

Ipswich supporters were particularly aggrieved, having already set off for the south coast ahead of the afternoon kick-off.

In League One, Doncaster's fixture against Luton, Port Vale versus Barnsley, and Rotherham's game with Mansfield all fell victim to frozen surfaces despite clubs using frost sheeting and lighting rigs throughout the week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice covering Greater Manchester on Sunday.

However, top-flight fixtures are expected to proceed as planned, with Manchester City's clash against Chelsea not under threat from the conditions.

Supporters travelling to matches across the region may face difficulties, with train services and road networks potentially affected by the wintry weather.

Some parts of the country could see up to 40 centimetres of snow as the cold snap continues to grip Britain.

Plymouth Argyle confirmed their League One encounter with Burton Albion would go ahead, though fans were urged to take extra care around the stadium.

Saturday's National League fixture between Morecambe and Altrincham was abandoned just six minutes before the scheduled start, with officials identifying safety concerns during the pre-match warm-up.

One frustrated supporter said: "Utter joke waiting this late. Half the attendance was already in the ground. It hasn't got colder!"

Lincoln City have taken innovative measures to protect their televised League One match against Peterborough, with the EFL providing a heated dome to cover the pitch.

Amber alerts for snow are also in place across several parts of Scotland, including Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands, Eilean Siar and Orkney and Shetland, from 6pm today until 10am tomorrow.

A less serious yellow alert for snow and ice covering many of the same areas is in effect until Tuesday.
