The Red Devils won 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday

Ruben Amorim has opened up on his decision not to watch Bruno Fernandes' winning penalty after Manchester United beat Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The fallen giants went ahead through a Josh Cullen own goal, with the visitors levelling through Lyle Foster.

Just over a minute after Foster's goal, Bryan Mbeumo opened his account for United.

Yet Burnley looked as though they'd earn a point when Jaidon Anthony struck to send the home fans into silence.

Right at the death, however, there was drama with the Red Devils awarded a penalty following a foul on Amad Diallo.

Fernandes, who missed from 12 yards against Fulham last weekend, stepped up to score - sparking wild celebrations around the ground in the process.

Amorim, however, didn't watch.

Like during Wednesday night's penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, the 40-year-old appeared too nervous and anxious to pay attention.

But Amorim insists he chooses to watch the fanns instead because he prefers it that way.

"I like to see the image of the fans. What has to be has to be," he told Premier League Productions.

"In that moment, I was thinking, it would be fair to win the game.

"And I did not think Bruno would miss a second in a row."

The result does, however, paper over the cracks.

United were flat again against Burnley, particularly in the second half, with the mood inside Old Trafford threatening to turn before Fernandes' dramatic late winner.

Amorim knows United have work to do. The former Sporting Lisbon boss continued: "It is three points, if you look at the game we should solve it in the first half and control the game - but we are fighting to the last minute because of things we overcomplicate.

"Look at the first half, we have so many chances to score.

"You feel you can control the game. But one throw in, one set piece. I shook my head, because sometimes football is like this.

"We now have two weeks with a lot of opportunities. This was a game we had to win, but we have a lot to do."

Amorim's future also remains uncertain.

He said after the defeat to Grimsby that he sometimes 'hates his players' and that he'd quit if he didn't feel he was the right man for the job.

When quizzed on whether he was thinking of his future prior to Fernandes' penalty, Amorim batted away the question.

"No, I was just thinking Bruno was not going to miss," he stated.
