Roy Keane has blasted the modern trend of managers confronting their players on the pitch, after cameras caught an awkward exchange - or lack of one - between Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and defender Marc Guehi.
Following Palace’s goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Glasner attempted to catch Guehi’s attention as the players left the field.
The England international, who is at the centre of intense transfer speculation, headed directly down the tunnel instead.

Team-mate Jean-Philippe Mateta even appeared to sense the tension when shaking Glasner’s hand moments later.

The scene, which many linked to Guehi’s uncertain future at Selhurst Park, prompted Keane to unleash one of his trademark rants in the Sky Sports studio.
For the former Manchester United captain, the real issue wasn’t Guehi’s reaction, but why managers feel the need to be on the pitch in the first place.
“Why has this happened over the last year or two?” Keane fumed.
“Where managers come on to the pitch and shake hands with everybody and the opposition players.

"A player has just had a tough match, he’s physically exhausted, and the manager is just trying to go and have a little chit-chat knowing that there’s talk of him leaving. As a player you don’t want to get involved in that as well.”
Keane, who managed Sunderland and Ipswich earlier in his career, explained that he always preferred to keep such conversations private.
He continued: “I’ve had managers come up after the game and you’re going, ‘what’s up with you? Let’s get down the tunnel. If you want to have a chat, we will do it inside.’
"Managers are always wanting to do something on the pitch. That’s all come in the last few years.

🗣️ "It's like the new garlic bread"

"What happened to years ago when the manager would shake the other manager’s hand and walk down the tunnel?
"It’s the new thing. It’s the new garlic bread. Just get down the tunnel, it’s just a league match.”
The 'garlic bread' reference, famously linked to comedian Peter Kay, has become something of a running joke for Keane, who also dropped it into one of his rants last season.
When asked whether he would ever have taken to the pitch to shake hands as a manager, Keane was typically blunt.
He said: “No. Why? You’re going to see them in the dressing room afterwards. It’s bad enough that your own manager is shaking your hand, why is the other manager shaking your hand? You’re the enemy!”
Meanwhile, Guehi’s snub has only fuelled speculation over his future.
With just one year left on his contract, Palace chiefs are weighing up whether to cash in now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.
Liverpool are thought to be leading the chase for the 24-year-old, though Glasner insists rumours should not be taken at face value.

“It’s good advice to the kids to not always believe what you read,” Glasner said after the game.
“Who knows if the rumours that are written are the truth? If most of them were true, the team couldn’t perform like this, be together and committed to each other like they are.
"The 15, 16 players who had the most minutes last year are still here. There are a lot of rumours about Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi but they were 100 per cent with this group and they have proved that in a big way.”
