Roy Keane and Lisa Carrick have not settled the score

Roy Keane has reignited a long-dormant dispute with Michael Carrick's wife during the latest instalment of the Stick to Football podcast.

The former Manchester United captain, now 54, took aim at Lisa Roughead whilst discussing her husband's appointment as interim boss at Old Trafford.

"His wife can always come in [if Carrick doesn't do well], cause she's got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She's probably doing the team talk," Keane remarked.

The barbed comment came as the Irishman reflected on whether incoming managers need to deliver rousing speeches to their new squads.

Drawing on his own experience at Sunderland, Keane noted he deliberately avoided addressing players for two days upon arrival, preferring to observe training sessions and "keep them all guessing."

The origins of this feud stretch back more than a decade to February 2014, when Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos in the Champions League.

Carrick featured in that disappointing performance and subsequently faced the cameras for a post-match interview.

Keane, working as a television pundit that evening, offered a withering assessment: "That interview was just like the performance, flat."

Lisa responded furiously on Twitter, writing: "Roy Keane what a ****, says anything to provoke a reaction."

The outburst proved short-lived, however, as she swiftly removed the post from the platform.

She followed up with a contrite message acknowledging her error of judgement.

"Deleted my tweet... Emotions got the better of me," she wrote.

The matter appeared settled until Keane's podcast appearance this week brought it roaring back into public discourse.

Keane's criticism extended beyond Lisa to encompass the coaching appointments made by the new interim manager.

The former Republic of Ireland captain expressed particular scepticism regarding Jonny Evans' elevation to the first-team setup.

"What has Jonny Evans done to be a coach of Man United's first team? He left the job four weeks ago - loans manager, and ironically comes back working with the first team. That's a big step up, isn't it?" Keane questioned.

He noted that Evans had departed his loans manager position only weeks earlier before Darren Fletcher brought him back, with Carrick subsequently retaining his services.

Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate and Travis Binnion complete the backroom team assembled by Carrick.

Keane conceded that Holland's presence would at least guarantee "top class training sessions" but admitted uncertainty about the coaching credentials of Evans and Woodgate.

Carrick secured the caretaker role following a thorough selection process that saw him edge out former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, once a close teammate of Keane's.

According to reports, the 44-year-old prevailed partly due to his acceptance that the position is unlikely to extend beyond his six-month contract.

The former midfielder previously enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career at Old Trafford, claiming five Premier League titles, the Champions League and Europa League among his honours across 464 appearances.

His relationship with Lisa spans nearly three decades, having been childhood sweethearts who married in 2007 and share two children together.

She typically avoids public attention and runs the Michael Carrick Foundation supporting disadvantaged youngsters.

Carrick's first test arrives on Saturday when Manchester United host rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
