Tributes have poured in for the former footballer

Romelu Lukaku has paid an emotional tribute to his father, Roger, who has passed away at the age of 58.

The Belgian striker confirmed the news on social media, posting a childhood photograph of himself alongside his dad.


Lukaku, currently playing for Napoli, described the loss as devastating and said life would never be the same without him.

Roger Lukaku, who also enjoyed a professional football career, was a central figure in his son’s rise to the top of the game.

Sharing his grief online, Lukaku wrote: “Thank you for teaching me everything I know. I’m forever grateful and appreciate you. Life will never be the same. Protecting and guiding me like no else could. I won’t be the same.

“The pain and tears are flowing big time. But God will give me the strength to get myself back together.

“Merci pour tout Roger Menama Lukaku Vieux Roy (for his friends). Mon Papa.”

The Belgian FA were among the first to offer condolences, saying: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lukaku family, following the passing of Roger Lukaku.”

Support for the striker also came from across the football community.
