Team Europe secured their first away win since 2012 on Sunday

After securing the Ryder Cup on Sunday, Team Europe erupted into celebration, following the volatile nature of the weekend at Bethpage Black, which included taunting US President Donald Trump.

President Trump had been at the New York golf course on Friday, as he witnessed the home side make one of the most disastrous starts in competition history.

The President received a rapturous reception as he walked out by the first tee and personally wished Bryson DeChambeau before his afternoon session.

A spirited comeback from Team USA on Sunday was not enough to turn the tide. Shane Lowry sank the putt that allowed Europe to retain the Ryder Cup. In the ensuing celebrations, a video emerged of McIlory filming the locker room as they chanted: “Are you watching, are you watching Donald Trump?”

After a disappointing start to the Cup, Team USA threatened one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history as they dominated the Singles session on Sunday.

Throughout the afternoon, Europe’s lead dwindled as they clawed away at half points to close in on glory. Eventually, it was Irishman Shane Lowry who tied his matchup to help Europe retain the Ryder Cup.

After he putted, he erupted into celebration, jumping and dancing throughout the green and breaking down in tears during the ensuing interview.

He revealed: “The Ryder Cup means everything to me, I won the Open in Ireland but the Ryder Cup is everything. To do that on the 18th in front of everyone — it was so hard. Fair play to the US lads. We knew they would come out fighting."

Team Europe captain Luke Donald admitted after the win: “That has to be the most stressful 12 hours of my life,

“A shoutout to the Americans, and Keegan Bradley’s captaincy. We knew they would be tough but we didn’t know they would be this tough. They fought so hard so respect to them.

“Luke is the greatest captain that has ever lived,” Lowry said. “He’s the most amazing man in the world. He’s done the best job. I don’t know what to say.”

For Lowry, the moment carried extra meaning knowing the next Ryder Cup will take place in Ireland. “It will be a little bit nicer than playing here, I know that!” he joked, still visibly emotional.
