ANALYSIS: Sports Reporter Ben McCaffrey gives his thoughts after today's Premier League games

The Premier League saw just two afternoon kick-offs today, but they certainly provided shock, late entertainment and absolute value for money.

It was disaster for Chelsea, who were shocked by newly-promoted Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. Alejandro Garancho got the hosts off to the perfect start after he calmly slotted the ball underneath Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. After that, Enzo Maresca’s side never really kicked on.

Sunderland’s equaliser was scrappy, with Wilson Isidor netting his fourth of the campaign. The visitors survived a barrage of long balls from Chelsea, and with the game seemingly petering to a 1-1 draw, Regis Le Bris would have been delighted with another remarkable point for his side in their quest for survival.

But, the jubilation was not to end there; the Black Cats put the cherry on the cake to a near-perfect away performance by grabbing an unlikely winner. Chemsdine Talbi arrived late into the box to slot the ball into the bottom corner to take all three points back to the Stadium of Light..

On Tyneside, Newcastle managed to grab a late victory against Fulham, with Jacob Murphy putting the hosts ahead after he capitalised clinically from a Calvin Bassey mistake.

Marco Silva’s side grew into the game so much so that their equaliser, courtesy of Sasa Lukic, was thoroughly deserved. After this, Toon pushed hard for a late winner, which came through captain Bruno Guimaraes, who always seems to come up when most needed.

With that being said, here is a full round-up of the afternoon's action.

Chelsea 1-2 Sunderland

Chelsea began the day in scintillating form, with Garnacho grabbing his first goal at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentinian received the ball in space from a distance, but still had so much work to do. After carrying the ball into the box, Garnacho performed a brilliant step-over before sliding the ball underneath Robin Roefs in the Black Cats' net.

But the lead lasted just 15 minutes before Isidor equalised for the visitors, and it came from the biggest trend in football at the moment: the long throw.

Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Nordi Mukiele hurled the ball into the box, causing utter pandemonium. It was Isidor who reacted smartest, tapping the ball in from close range to grab his fourth goal of the season, and his first away from the Stadium of Light.

Chemsdine Talbi

Chelsea dominated much of the ball for the remainder, but without a plan or sense of direction; rather lumping the ball into the box, which the five Sunderland defenders were more than happy to deal with.

But against all the odds, the visitors managed to nick it right at the end. After superb hold-up play by Brian Brobbey in the Chelsea box, he found Talbi arriving late who coolly rolled the ball into the bottom corner.

It’s devastating for Maresca, who has endured a mightily mixed season so far. Impressive victories over Liverpool and Nottingham Forest have been marred by disappointing performances against Brighton and Manchester United. Today was yet another. They simply did not do enough to win the game.

Next, they travel to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in a crunch match for both teams. They will need a marked improvement in performance if they want a chance at a positive result.

For Sunderland, their remarkable start to the campaign continues. Today is just another in a simply astonishing set of results that leaves the second in the league.

While the Black Cats look dangerous at times on the break with their dynamism and pace, they are more than happy to sit back and defend resolutely - and more than able to do so to great effect.

Newcastle 2-1 Fulham

Newcastle grabbed all three points on Tyneside - but it wasn't without a helping hand.

It was a tight first half, one that the visitors were really beginning to grow into, with Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and Alex Iwobi causing the Toon defence plenty of problems.

Despite this, Newcastle took the lead after Fulham defender Calvin Bassey was caught dallying on the ball by Murphy.

The winger nicked the ball from the Nigerian defender near the halfway line, before running with the ball into the box and unleashing an inch-perfect strike into the far corner, kissing the post on its way in.

It was a goal from absolutely nothing, but it proved yet again that you cannot make mistakes at this level; they will be punished.

But the Fulham pressure told just 10 minutes into the second half. The introduction of Kevin for the Cottagers added much-needed quality, and he played a crucial role in the equaliser by delivering a beautiful ball across the box.

Bruno Guimaraes

It was met by Jimenez, who slammed the ball into the upright, and midfielder Sasa Lukic leapt higher than Sven Botman to head the ball home just a yard or two out. The goal had been coming for some time for Silva’s men.

Fulham’s goal sparked something in Newcastle, though, with Guimaraes missing a golden opportunity merely moments after.

And it was the Brazilian who grabbed a late winner for the hosts, tapping home from close range after William Osula thunderous effort was parried.

While £34.6million signing Kevin shone again for the Cottagers, he could not do anything to avoid the result on the day.

For Newcastle, it was not a performance that lived up to the high expectations fans have set on them for this season, but Eddie Howe will be delighted with the character shown by his team at the end.
