An arrest was made on Tuesday

Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a 63-year-old man was taken into custody on Tuesday in connection with an alleged racially motivated attack in Richmond, west London.

The suspect faces three charges: common assault, attempted criminal damage, and a racially aggravated public order offence.

He has subsequently been released on bail pending further investigation.

The arrest follows an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning in which two Brentford first-team players stepped in to defend a man who was being assaulted.

Officers were summoned to the scene at approximately 2am, several hours after the Premier League club's 0-0 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

The two footballers, whose identities have not been disclosed, rushed to assist the victim upon witnessing the assault unfold.

Reports have indicated that both players were left with blood on them following the confrontation, though neither sustained injuries of a serious nature.

The Premier League club has declined to comment on the matter when approached by journalists.

Brentford's involvement in the incident came as something of a surprise, with the players having only just returned to the capital after their trip to Yorkshire.

The match at Elland Road was the final fixture before the international break, meaning squad members were permitted to arrange their own journeys home from Leeds.

Those who intervened in the alleged assault had opted to make their own travel arrangements back to London following the draw, rather than travelling with the rest of the squad.

Subsequent police enquiries have revealed a second victim in connection with the incident, who was allegedly subjected to verbal abuse of a racially aggravated nature.

Keith Andrews' side currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, trailing fifth-placed Liverpool by just three points and Chelsea in sixth by two.

The west London club, whom many pundits predicted would face relegation this season, are firmly in contention for Champions League qualification.

Brentford return to action when they host Everton at the Gtech Community Stadium on 11 April.
