The Toon's struggles continued in the defeat at St James' Park

Newcastle suffered a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day as their recent form went from bad to worse.

Alexander Isak put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute following a foul from Ola Aina.

Yet Forest levelled just before half time through Chris Wood, who was sold by the club back in the summer.

And Wood struck twice in the second half to give his side all three points and bag a hat-trick in the process. GB News now takes a look at four players who weren't good enough for Newcastle as they slumped to yet another defeat.

Dan Burn

Dan Burn was one of Newcastle's best players last season as they surprised many by qualifying for the Champions League.

However, his form has dropped off this term and he toiled against Forest on Tuesday.

Anthony Elanga caused Burn all sorts of problems due to his searing speed, while he was powerless to prevent Wood from scoring twice.

It was no surprise to see Howe withdraw the defender the moment Wood scored his second goal of the game.

Burn's lack of pace makes him a bizarre pick at left-back and that's an experiment that can't be allowed to continue.

Miguel Almiron

Miguel Almiron was another top performer for Newcastle last term.

However, he's struggled for consistency this term and the 29-year-old looked toothless in attack at St James' Park.

Almiron seemed fired up by Jack Grealish last season but is now starting to resemble the player of old.

For Howe, that's another worry with his Newcastle side seemingly in freefall.

Almiron will need to improve between now and the end of the season. Given the money Newcastle possess, signing an upgrade isn't out of the question.

Sven Botman

Sven Botman endured a horrific afternoon as Forest ran riot.

The 23-year-old couldn't cope with Wood and looked out of his depth throughout the entirety of the clash.

Wood didn't do much during his spell at Newcastle.

However, he was made to look unplayable by a poor Newcastle backline as they leaked three goals on home soil.

Botman walks into Newcastle's starting XI almost by default but, with the January transfer window due to open imminently, a fresh centre-back wouldn't go amiss as they look to qualify for the Champions League for the second season in a row.

On his day, Kieran Trippier is one of the best right-backs in the Premier League.

However, the veteran has been well off the pace recently and was poor as Newcastle slumped to defeat.

Trippier played Wood on for the striker's third goal of the game and failed to offer much in attack, too.

Newcastle won't have long to reflect on the defeat, with Howe's side due to face Liverpool on New Year's Day.
