Sheriff Bouchard described how the attacker drove through a set of doors before proceeding down a hallway, where something within the vehicle caught fire

The Jewish community is facing an "absolute nightmare" across the world, Kelvin MacKenzie has told GB News.

Speaking to the People's Channel, the ex-Editor of The Sun expressing his deepest sympathies for the community following an attack on a synagogue in Michigan.

A rifle-armed man drove his vehicle into Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, on Thursday before being shot dead by security personnel.

The incident occurred at one of America's largest synagogues, which serves approximately 12,000 members and operates an early childhood centre on site.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard confirmed that no children or staff members sustained any injuries during the attack.

However, one security guard was struck by the vehicle and lost consciousness, though their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The car burst into flames following the collision with the building, with smoke visible rising from the synagogue.

Reacting to the incident, Kelvin MacKenzie told GB News that he hopes the Jewish people "prevail" against the onslaught of abuse they face around the world.

He argued the incident illustrated why Israel, with a population of roughly 10 million, has engaged in conflict with Iran and its 100 million citizens.

"Iran's avowed number one policy throughout the whole of 1979 to 2026 policy is the extermination of Israel as a state," Mr MacKenzie told the broadcaster.

He suggested Jewish people feel perpetually vulnerable regardless of their location globally, which he said explained Israel's founding as a sanctuary from such violence.

"Being Jewish in the world right now must be an absolute nightmare," Mr MacKenzie added. "And God bless Israel and hope that they will prevail."

Sheriff Bouchard described how the attacker drove through a set of doors before proceeding down a hallway, where something within the vehicle caught fire.

"He was traveling with purpose down the hall, from my look at the video," the sheriff stated.

Security personnel spotted the individual and exchanged gunfire with him, according to Bouchard's earlier press conference.

Authorities were continuing efforts to establish the attacker's identity and determine what motivated the assault, according to a source familiar with the investigation who spoke anonymously to the Associated Press.

The source emphasised that inquiries remained at a preliminary stage.

Jewish places of worship worldwide have been operating under heightened alert since the United States and Israel commenced military action against Iran through missile strikes on 28th February.

American intelligence agencies have issued warnings that Iranian operatives may be plotting drone attacks targeting locations in California.

Separately, two individuals allegedly inspired by Islamic State brought explosives to a far-right demonstration outside the New York mayor's residence on Saturday.

The Michigan attack bears similarities to an incident in Manchester last October, when an assailant rammed a car into worshippers outside an Orthodox synagogue during Yom Kippur, subsequently stabbing two people fatally before being shot dead by police.
