Callum Wilson was emotional on Sunday

Eddie Howe has opened up on Callum Wilson after the Newcastle star cut an emotional figure following Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Everton.

The Toon were beaten at St James' Park with Carlos Alcaraz scoring the only goal of the game.

However, Newcastle were still able to qualify for next season's Champions League after Manchester United beat Aston Villa 2-0 following goals from Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen.

After Newcastle's defeat to Everton, Wilson was moved to tears.

The injury-plagued striker is widely expected to leave the club, with Newcastle poised to spend big on reinforcements.

And Howe, when asked about Wilson, kept his cards close to his chest. The Toon boss said: “Well, let's wait and see. We're going to sit down and talk with his representatives.

"What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are.

“Really professional, brave. I mean, to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment.

"The club needed hope and Callum gave them hope.

"He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well.

“He brings a positivity to the group. He's a leader within the changing room. He's just been incredible and let's wait and see what happens.

"It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There's still so much respect there between the two.”

It has been quite the season for Newcastle.

In addition to finishing in the top five, they also won the Carabao Cup earlier in the campaign with a memorable victory over Liverpool at Wembley.

A few shrewd signings could see the club challenging for the Premier League title soon enough.

And Howe hopes the club can get their recruitment right as they look to get better and better.

"The excitement this will bring the people here, and of course it’s a selling point for us now, it’s an opportunity to sell that dream to future players that might be considering coming to us.

"As I said, we have to get the financials right, we have to get the other aspects of trying to sign a player right. Hopefully, we can do that.”
