Eddie Howe has complained about Newcastle's performance against Arsenal, insisting his players were 'too passive' and became 'too sloppy' during their defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

The Toon were beaten 1-0 in north London, with Declan Rice scoring the only goal of the game.


It was a huge result for Arsenal, who have now qualified for the Champions League with one game left to spare.

As for Newcastle, they'll need to beat Everton at St James' Park next Sunday to make sure they qualify for Europe's premier competition.

Howe, speaking to the BBC, complained about Newcastle's display by saying: "We came under pressure at the start of the second half and you need to ride that storm and we had. Declan

"Rice produces that spectacular finish from that range. We did everything we could to get a goal.

"From our perspective, we got too passive and became a little bit sloppy on the ball. We'll learn from that. You do have times like that away from home.

"We have to take all the positives from that first half performance. We looked strong. Nick [Pope] didn't have too much to do.

Howe was, however, reluctant to say whether the forward would be able to be involved.

He added: "It is too early to say. It is a strange one, as he felt it after training.

"Got a scan this morning to see what the damage was. Hopefully, he will be available, but we don't know."

As for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, the Spaniard was pleased with the result as his side booked their place in next season's Champions League.

"The circumstances we have with the squad, but we managed to win it from an exceptional finish from Dec [Rice], again.

"Champions League secured. Overall, a positive afternoon.
