EXCLUSIVE: The former Manchester United striker has opened up to GB News amid talk of a potential takeover at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has defended the Glazers, amid talk that the controversial family could be about to sell the club after 20 years in charge.

The Americans purchased the Red Devils back in 2005, with the team initially successful under Sir Alex Ferguson in the years that followed.

United have regressed ever since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, however, with the fallen giants now well behind the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City at the summit.

Recently, reports have suggested that a blockbuster takeover could be on the cards.

Rumours were fuelled by Saudi chief Turki Al-Sheikh, who wrote on social media: "The best news I heard today is that Manchester United is now in an advanced stage of completing a deal to sell to a new investor – I hope he's better than the previous owners."

Since then, it's emerged the Glazers would demand in excess of £5billion to cut ties with the club after 20 years of rule and that a consortium from the Middle East is interested.

Many United fans blame the family for their poor form on the pitch since Ferguson's exit, with the Red Devils failing to get anywhere near winning the league.

The Glazers have sanctioned big deals for A-listers such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Angel Di Maria over the past decade or so, with many big names proceeding to struggle.

And former United striker Owen, speaking exclusively to GB News via casino.co.uk, has now defended the controversial Americans.

“Everyone likes to have someone to point the finger at, and the buck does stop with whoever’s at the top for all things off the pitch," he said.

"All things on the pitch will stop with the manager, even if the players aren't playing well.

“They're the people that will make the big decisions and live and die by those, but it's their club.

"At the end of the day, they put their money in, and they own the club, so they can make those decisions and whatever decisions they see fit.

“I do think lots of people from the outside can see that it's not so simple. Running a football club is not a simple process.

“Managing a football club is not so simple, either. Everyone has these ideas on why said club, in this case, Manchester United, aren’t doing so well, how they should be doing better.

“Looking at virtually every nook and cranny over the years, they've changed virtually everything, and everyone’s been saying, oh, this needs to change, that needs to change, and they've changed virtually all these things, and still, there's no success.

“It's not as easy as everybody thinks, quite clearly. It’s going to take more time.”

United have hired and fired a number of different managers since Ferguson's retirement.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and now Ruben Amorim have all found it tough to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

A takeover would, however, delight supporters who have grown accustomed to the team being sucked into mediocrity.

In 2022, the Glazers announced they were open to selling for the right price.

Ultimately, however, they agreed to accept an offer of minority investment from INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe is now the man in charge of football operations at Old Trafford, having been behind the appointment of Amorim in November last year.

And, speaking earlier this week, the United supremo insisted that the 40-year-old would be given time to turn things around despite poor results so far this season.

"Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years," he said.

When quizzed on whether the Portuguese would get that time, he added: "Yes. That is where I would be. Three years. Because football is not overnight.

"It's three years. You also look at [Mikel] Arteta at Arsenal. He had a miserable time over the first couple of years.

"We have to be patient. We have a long-term plan. It isn't a light switch. You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week."
