The 44-year-old will be taking a shot at television

Three months following his departure from Middlesbrough, Michael Carrick will make his debut as a television analyst for Prime Video's Champions League coverage on Tuesday evening.

The 44-year-old will provide commentary when Tottenham welcome Villarreal to north London.

The former England international's broadcasting opportunity marks a swift return to football after his managerial position at the Riverside Stadium concluded in June 2025.

This marks Tottenham's opening fixture in Europe's premier club competition, with Carrick bringing his extensive experience as both player and manager to the broadcast.

Carrick assumed control at Middlesbrough in October 2022, replacing Chris Wilder at the helm.

His initial impact proved encouraging, steering the club to a playoff position during the 2022-23 campaign.

Despite early promise, the subsequent two campaigns saw Middlesbrough fall short of the top six positions.

The club's supporters had anticipated the former midfielder would spearhead their return to the top flight.

Inconsistent results throughout his final season prompted the club's leadership to make a change in June 2025.

The board determined that a fresh direction was required to reinvigorate their promotion ambitions.

His dismissal caught some observers off guard, yet the decision reflected the club's determination to secure Premier League status.

During his dozen years at Old Trafford, Carrick accumulated an impressive collection of silverware, securing five Premier League championships, three League Cup victories and the 2008 Champions League trophy.

His playing style was characterised by exceptional ball distribution, tactical intelligence and his capacity to control match rhythm.

The midfielder represented England on 34 occasions between his 2001 debut and international retirement.

His most notable coaching achievement came during a brief period as caretaker boss in 2021, securing victories against Villarreal and Arsenal before voluntarily stepping aside when Ralf Rangnick arrived.

The broadcasting role represents Carrick's latest professional venture since leaving Middlesbrough.

Working alongside Dimitar Berbatov, with whom he shared successful years at Old Trafford, he will offer tactical analysis for Tottenham's European campaign opener.

His appointment to Prime Video's punditry team adds another former United star to their Champions League coverage, bringing first-hand experience of competing at Europe's highest level.
