The Red Devils are hoping to bolster their attack

Manchester United have submitted a bid for Benjamin Sesko as they look to beat Newcastle to the forward's signature.

The Slovenia international has emerged as a top target for Ruben Amorim, who is eager to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford after a nightmare first season at the helm.

United currently have Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as their main No 9 options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Yet Amorim believes more firepower is required and Sesko, according to The Athletic, has now been the subject of a formal offer from the fallen giants.

It's claimed United have offered €75million plus €10m in add-ons for the RB Leipzig star, who netted 13 Bundesliga goals last season.

This latest development comes just 24 hours after it emerged Newcastle had lodged an improved offer for Sesko, having seen their first bid rejected.

The Toon, who have Champions League football to offer the forward, originally tabled a bid of €75m plus €5m in bonuses.

After being turned down, they then increased that fee to €80m.

United believe that their bid for Sesko is the right one, with the Red Devils eager not to overpay.

Signings have been a big problem for the club ever since Sir Alex Ferguson emotionally walked off into the sunset back in 2013.

So far this summer, United have recruited Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolves and Brentford respectively.

In addition to a new striker, Amorim is believed to want a new goalkeeper - with Andre Onana failing to live up to expectations since his arrival from Inter Milan two years ago.

Another midfielder is being eyed, too, with the Red Devils losing Christian Eriksen earlier this summer.

United have, however, a mixed record when it comes to reinforcements from the Bundesliga.

Their first-ever import from Germany was Owen Hargreaves.

He started well at the club, helping them win the Premier League and Champions League in 2008, but decided to join Manchester City after being released in 2012 - with injuries hampering him severely.

Shinji Kagawa was another disappointment.

He was Ferguson's third-last signing during the Scot's time at the helm but never really adjusted to life in English football, despite previously sparking at Borussia Dortmund.

Bastian Schweinsteiger arrived from Bayern Munich back in the summer of 2015 with many expecting him to shine at Old Trafford.

However, he lasted just 18 months before being offloaded to MLS side Chicago Fire - having toiled under both Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal.
