Arsenal 2-3 Manchester United: Michael Carrick lands another scalp with late win

Matheus Cunha delivered an absolute stunner in the 87th minute to hand Manchester United a breathtaking 3-2 triumph over Premier League leaders Arsenal at Emirates Stadium this evening.

The Brazilian substitute collected a pass from Kobbie Mainoo before bending a magnificent effort into the bottom corner from roughly 25 yards out.

It's a result that will send shockwaves through the title race, with Arsenal suffering their first home defeat of the campaign.

The Gunners had looked set to rescue a point just moments earlier, but Cunha's brilliance ensured Michael Carrick's men claimed all three points in spectacular fashion.

Arsenal had dominated the opening exchanges and got their reward just before the half-hour mark, though it came in rather fortunate circumstances.

Martin Odegaard's effort was deflected past Senne Lammens by United defender Lisandro Martinez, who could only watch in horror as the ball nestled in his own net.

The hosts looked in complete control, but a dreadful mistake from Martin Zubimendi changed everything.

The midfielder's wayward pass gifted Bryan Mbeumo a clear run at goal, and the United striker made no mistake, rounding David Raya before slotting into an empty net to level the scores.

United's momentum carried into the second half, and they stunned the Emirates crowd just five minutes after the restart.

Patrick Dorgu unleashed a thunderous strike that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar, leaving Raya with absolutely no chance.

Mikel Arteta responded by throwing on four fresh players at once – Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino and Ben White – in a desperate bid to turn things around.

The gamble appeared to pay off in the 84th minute when Merino bundled the ball over the line from a Bukayo Saka corner, seemingly rescuing a point for the hosts.

But Arsenal's joy lasted less than three minutes.

Cunha, who had come off the bench, picked up possession and curled an exquisite shot from distance that flew into the corner, silencing the home crowd completely.

It's United's first league victory at the Emirates since 2017, ending Arsenal's remarkable 17-match unbeaten run at home.

The win lifts Carrick's side into fourth place, leapfrogging both Chelsea and Liverpool, while Arsenal's title hopes have taken a serious knock.

The Gunners are now winless in three Premier League matches following goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, with their advantage at the summit trimmed to just four points.
