Manchester United are set to approach Michael Carrick over the possibility of taking charge until the end of the season.
The Red Devils decided to sack Ruben Amorim on Monday, with the 40-year-old cut loose less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw with Leeds.
Following that showdown, Amorim decided to go on the front foot - with the Portuguese coach suggesting he wasn't getting enough support from his bosses at the top.
He was gone less than a day later, with United supremos Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada informing him that he'd been reloeved of his duties.

United have confirmed that Darren Fletcher will oversee Wednesday night's tricky away clash against Burnley at Turf Moor.
According to the i newspaper, however, the fallen giants are set to approach Carrick about the prospect of overseeing the rest of the season.
The 44-year-old is currently a free agent, having left Championship side Middlesbrough back in the summer.

They beat Villarreal and Arsenal, while drawing against Chelsea through that brief spell.
Carrick's affinity with United started back in the summer transfer window of 2006, when he joined the club from Tottenham for a fee of around £18million.

Carrick departed in 2015 after helping the Red Devils secure glory in the FA Cup while Louis van Gaal ruled the roost.
Reports have suggested that when it comes to a permanent boss, Oliver Glasner is the frontrunner to take charge.
The Austrian has achieved plenty of success at Crystal Palace, winning trophies such as the FA Cup and Community Shield.
Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez has also been linked, with the 45-year-old still available following his departure from the Nou Camp in 2024.
And Unai Emery, Gareth Southgate and Kieran McKenna are all candidates for the position as well.

| GETTYFormer United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, meanwhile, thinks his old side need to get their next appointment right.
"We heard Ruben Amorim and his cryptic comments point a finger in that direction but there are always two sides to every story," he said.
"But I really think in terms of Manchester United and where they have gone, they do seem as far away [from the Premier League title] as they have been for 10 years.
"Last season they were 15th. This season they are sitting in sixth and it's still a salvageable season in terms of league position and with the variety of results that are going on.
"They could very well still get into the Champions League spot but as a title contender, they are still quite a way away.
"This next appointment is a huge appointment. We've said that a lot over the last 10 years but it couldn't be more true than now because this behind the scenes has to be cleared up."
