Manchester United's HR team feared Jadon Sancho had grounds to make a legal complaint after Erik ten Hag revealed his struggles with mental health last year, reports say.
The winger is expected to leave Old Trafford on transfer deadline day, with Juventus and Chelsea circling.
United expected Sancho to fire them to Premier League title glory when they snapped him up from Borussia Dortmund three years ago.
Yet the 24-year-old has failed to live up to expectations, having toiled under Ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Last September, after United lost 3-1 to Arsenal, Ten Hag ruthlessly accused Sancho of not training hard enough.
The England international then hit back at the Dutchman, effectively calling his manager a liar, with Ten Hag forcing him to train alone.
The saga unfolded months after Ten Hag had revealed Sancho was struggling with his mental health.
According to the Daily Mail, United's HR team feared Sancho would potentially make a legal complaint at the time because Ten Hag 'did not receive approval from the player' to disclose the issues.

Sancho would end up joining Borussia Dortmund on loan in January after being isolated following the defeat to Arsenal, with the winger helping the Bundesliga giants make the Champions League final.
If the attacker had his way, he'd have joined Dortmund again permanently this summer.
But with Sancho too expensive, and finances not adding up, a third stint at the Westfalenstadion is out of the question.
Ten Hag and Sancho appeared to call a truce earlier this summer but, according to the report, this was merely a 'sham'.

Relations between the duo remain tense, with Sancho left out of the squad for matches against Fulham and Brighton.
Chelsea could use Raheem Sterling as bait to land Sancho today as the clock ticks down.
However, it's currently unclear if United would accept the 29-year-old in return - given his own form issues at Chelsea.
Juventus are big admirers of Sancho too.
