The Carabao Cup served up some absolute drama on Wednesday night

There were nine Premier League teams in action on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City among them.

And they had it all, last-gasp goals, red cards, cup shocks and brilliant finishes.

The pressure remains on Arne Slot, whose youthful Liverpool were thrashed at Anfield by Crystal Palace.

Chelsea thought they were cruising after three goals up against Wolves only to see their defence completely collapse.

And Swansea City - the only Championship side of the round - gave multi-millionaires Manchester City an almighty scare.

Altogether, the Carabao Cup gave a reminder why it an integral part of the footballing calendar. So how did they get on?

Liverpool boss Slot made 10 changes to the side that lost to Brentford at the weekend, with only Milos Kerkez keeping his spot.

But Crystal Palace did not care, claiming an incredible victory led by Ismaila Sarr, who netted twice.

The Reds were absymal, registering just one shot on target while youngster Amara Nallo was sent off on his Carabao Cup debut.

Yeremy Pino wrapped up the result to make it another miserable night for Liverpool.

Chelsea thought they were cruising after going 3-0 up after nearly 20 minutes with goals from Andrey Santos, Tyrique George and Estevao Willian.

But a second-half capitulation threatened an embarrassing exit for Enzo Maresca's men after Wolves came back with goals from Tolu Arokodare and David Moller Wolfe to reduce the deficit to one.

Liam Delap, making his first appearance in nearly three months, was sent off for a moment of madness, smashing a defender with an elbow after already receiving a yellow card.

That was before Jamie Gittens scored his first goal for the Blues in sumptuous style, hitting an incredible effort with the outside of his boot around 25 yards out that whistled past Jose Sa.

Wolves scored immediately from kick-off in injury-time through Wolfe again leading to a frantic end but the scoreline remained to give Maresca a huge sigh of relief.

Arsenal 2-0 Brighton

Arsenal made wholesale changes to their side on Wednesday night with 15-year-old Max Dowman earning a start but Brighton gave them a good game until after the break.

Ethan Nwaneri opened the scoring for the Gunners soon after the break before Bukayo Saka came off the bench to confirm the result.

It is an eighth win in a row for Mikel Arteta's side, who are top of the Premier League and looking rock-solid at the back.

The Gunners will enter November having not conceded a goal since September 28.

The Carabao Cup champions are into the last-eight after a downing Tottenham 2-0 at St. James' Park.

Goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade made sure Eddie Howe's men remain in the hunt to defend their crown.

Woltemade, in particular, was extremely impressive and has hit the ground running since his £65million move from Stuttgart.

The Germany international, who was wanted by Bayern Munich in the summer, netted his sixth of the season after effectively replacing Alexander Isak.

Swansea 1-3 Manchester City

A much-changed City side were left gobsmacked after Swansea took the lead in emphatic fashion through Goncalo Franco.

The 24-year-old picked out the top corner with a sublime effort outside the box to give Pep Guardiola food for thought.

He responded by putting on the big boys; John Stones, Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol. City ramped it up after the break.

Goals from Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki prevented a major shock in south Wales on Wednesday night.
