GB News’ Sports Reporter Fintan Starkey gives his analysis on Liverpool’s first Champions League game of the season

Liverpool delivered another injury-time winner in a dramatic 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid as Virgil van Dijk scored late on, having relinquished a two-goal lead 10 minutes before.

The Reds opened the scoring early after Andy Robertson scored his first Champions League goal in six years when Mohamed Salah’s free kick clattered off the legs of the Scotsman and fired the Premier League champions in front.

Salah then took it upon himself to produce some sublime skill to keep his feet around two defenders to slot the second past Jan Oblak on his 500th start for Atletico.

The Spanish side did not go down without a fight with Marcos Llorente blasting a shot past Alisson to close the gap between the sides just before half-time.

Late into the contest, Llorente grabbed his second with a deflected shot that flew into the Liverpool net and it looked like Atletico would leave Merseyside with a point - but that is not how the Reds roll this season.

Van Dijk planted a header past Jan Oblak from a corner in the 92nd minute to secure all three points for Liverpool - their fourth winner in injury-time this season already.

But what did we learn from Liverpool scraping a win on the opening night of the league phase?

Liverpool fans rejoiced to see their British record signing, Alexander Isak, make his debut for Liverpool, but the Swede looks to still be getting back up to match fitness as the season progresses.

Isak played the first 55 minutes of the game and showed good pressing on the ball; however, he has yet to show the skill that saw him justify the price Liverpool has forked out for him.

There was a worry over the stadium as Isak was clattered into as he chased a loose ball, leaving him on the floor with an ankle injury, but after treatment, he was able to get going again.

His first attempt at goal came as the first half was coming to a close, with the Swede taking a touch and turning before squeezing a shot between two Madrid defenders, quickly followed up by a shot directly at Oblak as the Anfield faithful were roaring for him to get his first goal in red.

Salah has had a calm opening start to the season, with many wondering if his age is affecting his ability; however, tonight showed exactly why he is one of the best players in the world.

While the first goal may have been a stroke of luck, Salah put a great low ball into the box that allowed Robertson to bundle it home.

The second goal really showcased the skill of the Egyptian as he fought his way through three defenders to score the second goal.

Once the two goals were in, Salah was still all over the pitch and nearly volleyed a third goal in before the 30-minute mark. He then continued his great display when he nearly scored again in the second half as he rattled the post when Oblak was clearly beaten.

Fans will be hoping he can take his impressive form into the Merseyside derby against Everton at the weekend as Liverpool look to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.

Within the opening ten minutes of the game, it looked as though it would be a steamrolling for Liverpool, as the score looked as though it could reach five or six.

But Diego Simeone’s side managed to steady the ship and by the end of the first half, they were rightly rewarded for their work, scoring the goal to bring them back into touching distance.

At 2-0 the game looked very different, but they fought their way back into the match and showed great character, especially when their domestic form is considered.

Atletico currently sit 11th in La Liga, already seven points behind league leaders Real Madrid but the side that came to Anfield came with a determination, and as the game went on and the score stayed 2-1, the travelling fans began to believe a result could be on the cards for the side.

Llorente was the star of the night as he managed to score two goals and drew the game level for the Spanish side, but it wasn't enough for the Spanish side.

Controversy marred the first goal from Madrid as the goal looked as though it should have been disallowed, with an Atletico player blocking the sight of Alisson; however, it was checked by VAR and allowed, something the commentary team and many fans online disagreed with.

That was not the only time VAR was needed as Liverpool were bizarrely awarded a penalty for handball before the referee realised that it did not actually hit the hand of the Madrid defender.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to the Merseyside derby when they face Everton at Anfield, looking to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.

While Atletico Madrid will go on to face Mallorca as they aim to turn their season around.
