Leicester City employees have reportedly been told their December wages will not arrive until New Year's Eve, abandoning the club's longstanding practice of paying staff ahead of the festive period.

The decision has triggered anger and frustration among workers at King Power Stadium.

The Championship side argues the changes are needed to synchronise payment schedules across the wider King Power Group.

Concerns have emerged that the delay will leave families struggling during the holiday season.

One supporter told the Telegraph: "A friend of mine received an email and told me lots of club staff have no funds for Christmas now and their families will go without gifts."

Kamonthip Netthanomsak, the club's interim managing director, addressed the situation in correspondence with employees.

In the email, she wrote: "Hi all – You should have received an email regarding the alignment of payroll dates across the King Power Group.

"We can appreciate that the timing of this decision is not ideal and that staff may subsequently have financial commitments they were planning to meet with the benefit of an earlier payday before Christmas."

It added: "Should any staff require particular support in this regard, the process will be treated in confidence and we will do our best to provide support where it is needed."

The change stems from efforts to unify payroll dates throughout the King Power organisation.

The Foxes, who captured the Premier League title in remarkable circumstances 10 years ago, are owned by Thailand-based retail giant King Power, a business worth multiple billions of dollars.

Reports indicate the payment delay is unconnected to any financial difficulties at the club and instead represents an unfortunate circumstance that required more advanced warning to staff.

Leicester dropped out of the top flight last season and currently sits eighth in the Championship standings.

The club remains in a holding pattern regarding separate matters.

Having attended a legal hearing last month concerning alleged breaches of financial regulations, they are awaiting the disciplinary commission's verdict.

For much of their history, Leicester City were considered a modest club, frequently moving between divisions and rarely competing for major honours, which made their recent achievements all the more unexpected.

Their 2015-16 Premier League title win is widely regarded as one of the greatest sporting achievements of all time.

It gave them a base to continue competitiveness, including FA Cup success in 2021.
