The defender moved to Burnley this summer after eight years at Manchester City

Kyle Walker has taken aim at Manchester City, claiming he was used as the ‘excuse’ for the poor performance last season.

Walker left City in January after a difficult start to last season, which saw them finally lose the Premier League title for the first time in five years.

He moved to AC Milan, where he showed good form after being persuaded to move to Italy by legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Walker then surprised fans after he announced he would be moving to the newly-promoted Burnley this summer.

“I wasn't playing,” he said. "I have the utmost respect for Manchester City fans. They have been incredible, incredible. We've given them fantastic moments. True fans who stuck with us through good and bad.

“But I felt, I don't want to say scapegoat because I don't want to bring out the violins. But I was the captain and the team wasn't doing well.

"There were big players missing in a big period in that season and I just felt like I was getting, not blamed.

"I won't say blamed but I felt I was the excuse because I was the captain.”

The ex-Spurs players had a lot of interest when he decided to leave Man City, but ultimately chose to join the newly promoted side.

Looking back, the 35-year-old revealed that he regrets leaving.

“Should I have left the team, looking back at it? Probably not," he added.

“I probably should have stuck by the lads and came through the sticky patch together.

"But sometimes selfishly, you look at yourself and kind of think. ‘okay, well, let me go and experience something different.’”

He revealed he joined the Clarets because of his former team-mate, Scott Parker, who is now the club's manager.

The duo played at Spurs for two years and was the substitute who replaced Parker off the bench for his England debut in 2011.

“My agent said Burnley are interested and he kind of said, ‘Am I a bit stupid in asking if you want to go there?’, And I said, ‘No, definitely not, I'd love to speak to Scott,’” he told the Telegraph.

Walker seems to be hoping to add his experience to help the team try and stay up this season.

They were thumped by his former side, Spurs, on opening weekend 3-0.

However, Burnley bounced back on Saturday with a 2-0 win over fellow Premier League newcomers Sunderland at Turf Moor, with Walker playing a part in the club's second goal.
