Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has issued a heartfelt statement following the tragic incident at Liverpool's title parade where a car ploughed into fans on Monday.

The 57-year-old German, who handed the reins over to Arne Slot last year, took to Instagram on Tuesday morning to express his distress.

"My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You'll Never Walk Alone," Klopp wrote.

The incident occurred on Water Street just after 6pm on Monday, where fans had gathered to celebrate Liverpool's Premier League title win.

The jubilant scenes were abruptly ended when a vehicle collided with a number of people who had been enjoying the parade.

Klopp had been in attendance at the parade and was pictured taking in the celebrations alongside fellow Reds legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Earlier, he had posted updates to his Instagram story as he watched the title celebrations from a high-up viewpoint in the city centre.

Klopp has been working as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer since January after leaving Liverpool last year.

According to the North West Ambulance Service, 27 people were taken to hospital following the incident, including four children.

Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram confirmed on Tuesday morning there are "still four people who are very, very ill in hospital," one of which being a child.

"We are hoping, of course, that they pull through," he continued.

A further 20 people were treated at the scene, with some patients also taking themselves to local hospitals.

In total, 47 people were injured in the incident.

Merseyside Police confirmed a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: "We believe this to be an isolated incident and are not currently looking for anyone else. The incident is not being treated as terrorism."

Police have urged people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident or share distressing footage online.

Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Liverpool club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish also issued a message of support following the incident.

"Shocked, horrified and deeply saddened about what happened at the end of the parade today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone and their families who have been impacted by today's tragic event.

"Our anthem has never felt more appropriate, You'll Never Walk Alone. Your Liverpool family are behind you," the 74-year-old said.

On Tuesday morning, a police cordon remained in place at the scene of the incident on Water Street.

A large police van was parked in front of a blue tent on the road, with officers stationed along the street.

The tragedy occurred just a day after Klopp had been at Anfield for the season-ending draw with Crystal Palace, which preceded Liverpool's Premier League trophy lift.

Following that match, the German had posted pictures with his successor, Slot, and captain Virgil van Dijk with the caption: "Congratulations, Champions!! What a team, what a club, what a season! YNWA [heart]".
