GB News sports editor Jack Otway takes a look at the 22-year-old's situation following the Three Lions' 2-0 victory on Sunday night

Just over a year ago, Jude Bellingham was undroppable for England.

As the Three Lions laboured their way to the final of the European Championships under Gareth Southgate in the summer of 2024, it was their magnificent midfielder who was driving them towards the trophy.

Bellingham scored the winner for England against Serbia in their opening match of the competition.

He then proceeded to net a stunning overhead kick to force extra-time in a difficult contest against Slovakia, with England eventually going on to make the final before losing to Spain.

Fast-forward to now, however, and Bellingham's undroppable status is no more.

On Sunday night, he was reinstated to Thomas Tuchel's England XI in the place of Morgan Rogers - who had started in the 2-0 victory over Serbia mere days earlier.

Bellingham performed well enough. There were flashes of brilliance, especially in the first half when he drove from deep - leaving the Albanian defence trailing in his wake.

But all doesn't seem to be well with the 22-year-old these days when it comes to the international stage. And when he was substituted by Tuchel in the second half, having picked up a yellow card, the England star was visibly frustrated.

Bellingham could barely hide it. He sat on the bench, knowing the cameras were on him, sulking. Tuchel, speaking after the match, vowed to review the incident.

"I don't want to make more out of it but I stick to my words - 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the team-mates who come in," said the German, whose side won all of their qualifiers ahead of next summer's World Cup.

"Decisions are made and you have to accept it as a player.

"Morgan Rogers was for sure not happy when he couldn't start today because he deserves to play for us and he wants to play all the time. We gave him a bit of a rest because he came with a lot of minutes for his club and played against Serbia."

Tuchel had warned his squad beforehand that he didn't want any dismissals.

Citing Cristiano Ronaldo, who could miss the first game of the World Cup following his red card for Portugal against Ireland, the England boss made his stance crystal clear.

But that won't satisfy Bellingham. Right now, there appears to be something going on behind the scenes.

Perhaps it is because he's no longer a guaranteed starter. For a player of his ability and quality, for a player who has elevated England in the past, that will be a bitter pill to swallow.

Yet there's another possible explanation. Potentially, Bellingham's nose has been placed out of joint because of dressing room politics.

It has previously been reported that Bellingham is a rather isolated figure within England camps. Certainly, there have been issues involving the former Borussia Dortmund and Birmingham City star in the past.

After last year's European Championships, reports emerged saying that some England players felt there was a 'propaganda campaign' involving Bellingham.

Several members of the squad felt that promotional work that featured the midfielder was disrespectful to their own contributions. That he was portrayed as England's only good player, when there are so many others.

The Athletic went as far as saying that Bellingham had only one friend within England camps: Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And it was also claimed that several England players felt the 22-year-old was given special treatment under Gareth Southgate, who enabled him to refuse to appear in most media interviews during the Euro 2024 tournament.

Bellingham has also strained his relationship with some England supporters, too.

After the Euros, he claimed he had been made a 'scapegoat' following the Three Lions' failure to go all the way. That didn't sit well with some fans, many of which had cheered him on.

Something is going on with Bellingham.

What happens next, and how Tuchel responds privately to his midfielder's latest strop, remains to be seen.
