The former Liverpool defender faces backlash online after calling a Burnley player 'brain-dead'

Jamie Carragher has faced calls to be sacked from his role as a pundit and co-commentator at Sky Sports after his controversial comments during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Burnley.

It was an underwhelming performance from Carragher’s former side, who struggled to create anything of note and became increasingly frustrated by a stern Burnley team.

Scott Parker’s side looked certain to grab a priceless point against the champions but it would be a familiar feeling for the former Fulham boss, who saw his side concede a penalty with merely seconds left on the clock, as had been the case at Old Trafford last month.

It was a moment of madness from second-half substitute Hannibal Mejbri; the former Manchester United man raised his arm when attempting to block a cross from Jeremie Frimpong.

With the ball striking the flailing elbow it gave referee Michael Oliver no choice but to award the penalty.

Mohamed Salah would subsequently dispatch the spot kick with his usual authority into the top corner, condemning the Clarets to their third defeat of the season already.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher did not mince his words on commentary duties for Sky Sports, declaring the Burnley midfielder as “brain-dead” for conceding the penalty, prompting a swift response from fans calling for his firing.

On social media platform X, one fan said: “Jamie Carragher should be sacked for calling Hannibal ‘brain dead’.”

Another wrote: “Jamie Carragher how dare you say a professional footballer's brain dead is disgraceful. It was a mistake, you should be sacked.”

A third added: “Carragher should be sacked, someone in his post calling a player brain dead, like his punditry?”

While a fourth demanded: “Carragher needs to be sacked after calling someone brain dead, disgusting.”

The Hannibal incident was not the only moment throughout the game that caused a reaction from Carragher.

Liverpool defender Milos Kerkez was booked during the first half for simulation after he threw himself to the floor, to the dismay of former Manchester City defender Kyle Walker and referee Oliver.

And Carragher was also less than impressed with the dive, branding the Hungarian as “stupid”.

"Absolutely stupid," Carragher said.

"[Referee Michael Oliver] was in a good position to see it.

"I don’t know why he would do that. He was in a good position!"

Despite the controversy, Liverpool would extend their 100 per cent Premier League record this year to four games and find themselves at the summit of the table.

Carragher was not left impressed by his former team’s performance, though, claiming: "If Liverpool play like that, they won't be winning games every week.”
