Manchester United have released Jadon Sancho after his contract expired

Manchester United have officially confirmed that Jadon Sancho will depart Old Trafford as a free agent following the expiration of his contract this month.

The club released a succinct statement alongside news of other departures: "Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell and Jadon for their contributions to Manchester United and wish them the very best of luck for the future."

The 26-year-old winger's exit brings to a close a turbulent five-year spell that never matched the promise of his arrival.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro and injury-plagued left-back Tyrell Malacia are also leaving when their deals conclude at the end of June.

The financial toll of Sancho's tenure has been staggering for the Red Devils.

United paid £73 million to secure his signature from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021, with total expenditure including wages estimated to exceed £100 million.

The return on that investment proved woeful: merely 12 goals and six assists across 83 appearances in all competitions.

In the Premier League specifically, Sancho managed just nine goals from 41 starts, completing the full 90 minutes on only ten occasions.

The club opted against triggering a one-year extension clause, instead allowing the former England international to walk away for nothing.

Sancho's relationship with former manager Erik ten Hag deteriorated dramatically in September 2023 when the Dutchman publicly criticised his training performances after omitting him from a matchday squad.

The winger responded on social media, accusing Ten Hag of making him a "scapegoat" and refusing to apologise.

A four-month standoff followed before Sancho returned to Dortmund on loan, where he helped the German side reach the Champions League final.

Chelsea subsequently took him on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy, yet paid a £5million penalty to avoid completing the permanent transfer after he managed just five goals in 41 appearances.

A final loan spell at Aston Villa followed, though he struggled to secure regular starts under Unai Emery.

Former United striker Louis Saha has delivered a damning verdict on the winger's Old Trafford career, labelling him "the most disappointing signing in Manchester United history."

Saha expressed bewilderment at Sancho's struggles: "The level he had shown at Borussia Dortmund before joining, he showed so much promise because he is an enormous talent. It felt like a mystery."

Despite his Premier League failures, Sancho remains highly regarded in Germany, where he recorded 114 goal involvements in 137 matches during his first Dortmund stint.

Reports indicate he is open to a third spell at Signal Iduna Park, with head coach Niko Kovac reportedly giving approval for a move.
