Football fans have hit out against Sky Sports as the broadcaster suffered a live outage on Tuesday night.

Thousands of Britons were unable to watch matches across the Championship, League One, League Two and the EFL Trophy.

Sky Sports+, which normally shows every EFL fixture excluding the 3pm blackout period, was launched in August 2024 and promised to offer more choice to existing subscribers.

Over 12 million viewers have paid for the service in the UK, according to the broadcaster's figures.

Many of them were left without coverage and reported being shown a message that read: "Unfortunately playback is not possible due to a technical problem. Please try again later."

Fans attempting to watch games such as Notts County vs MK Dons, Doncaster Rovers vs Stockport, as well as Swindon vs Cheltenham, reported problems.

One Portsmouth fan, who was unable to watch their team's match against Swansea, wrote on social media: "[Sky Sports] it appears that my Twitter feed is full of smug people with illegal streams of the Portsmouth game working perfectly.

"Whereas I, who pays you a fortune each month, can't appear to watch the game!"

Another second fan said: "Pay a fortune for Sky Sports and it's so poor when watching EFL on the red button.'

Another added: "[Sky Sports] what is going on with your red button on SS+, I subscribed to Sky to get EFL, and you can't get it right."

A Cheltenham fan wrote: "Cheers Sky… Your coverage on Sky Sports+ is a joke. Missed a wonder strike apparently…"

An Oxford supporter said: "SkySports sort it out, what are we paying for? Not a premium service."

More fans took to social media to express their anger.

A supporter wrote: "Absolutely horrendous service again from Sky Sports+. Astounding that this is under a paid service, disgraceful."

Adding to the anger, another viewer said: "Sky Sports Plus down again.

"When are you going to start giving refunds? No wonder so many people get dodgy fire sticks."

Sky Sports announced in May 2025 that it had extended its deal to show EFL matches for five more years, with more than 1,000 games to be broadcast during that time.

After the deal was announced, the broadcaster's managing director Jonathan Licht said: "We believe that fans of all 72 league clubs will benefit with increased coverage across all the leagues and competitions.

"With four times as many matches than we currently offer, we will capture even more of the excitement created by this unique league - and in a way that will be immediately accessible to millions of supporters."

The broadcaster issued a response to the complaints, apologising for any inconvenience caused.

A Sky Sports spokesman said: "Last night, customers watching EFL streams experienced disrupted coverage due to technical issues. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused to those trying to watch."
