The German suffered a nasty ankle injury during Bayern's quarter final

Fans have been left fuming after Bayern Munich and Germany star Jamal Musiala suffered a horror injury in the first half of their quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Club World Cup has faced significant backlash following the introduction of the new format this year.

Supporters have been questioning the ethics of hosting the tournament directly after a long, gruelling domestic season and the toll it can have on the players.

Managers have also slammed the tournament, with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca embarking on an astonishing rant claiming the tournament was "not football."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola warned the competition could "destroy" his team’s campaign next year, whereas former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp labelled it "the worst idea ever implemented in football".

But, it may be Bayern boss Vincent Kompany who is the most frustrated, after he lost star player Jamal Musiala to a serious ankle injury in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The injury occurred when Musiala, 22, chased down a through ball in the 47th minute and collided with the onrushing PSG goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

With his foot planted, the force of Donnarumma meant Musiala’s leg went completely the wrong way, in turn breaking the bone and suggesting a significant period on the sidelines may be facing the young German.

Fans took to social media to express their frustrations with the tournament.

One supporter said: "Why do we have a Club World Cup? Why do the best players have to play after a nine month season? This is so crazy."

Another questioned the ill-timed tournament amid the injury, saying: "Looking at Musiala let it just sink that how awful was the decision to conduct this club world cup immediately after the season."

A third added: "Scrap the club world cup. Needless."

A fourth wrote: "Ban the club world Cup, it's just pointless…"

Musiala is a key member of Kompany’s attack and had only just recovered from an injury in time for the Club World Cup that had kept him out since the start of April.

The German left the pitch with the game tied at 0-0, after Dayot Upamecano’s goal was ruled out for offside for the German champions.

French youngster Desire Doue then scored in the second half for the French side.

PSG incurred two red cards during the game, when Ecuadorian defender Willian Pacho led with a high boot on Leon Goretzka, and Lucas Hernandez elbowed Raphael Guerreiro.

Despite this, the French side extended their lead in stoppage time through Ousmane Dembele, condemning Bayern to a quarter-final exit.

While injuries are a major risk in any football game, the pulling factor for the clubs at the tournament is the prize money up for grabs.

The winner is expected to pull in excess of £90million, around the same as the Champions League.

Chelsea remain England’s sole representation in the tournament, after Manchester City were knocked out against Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal earlier in the week.

The Blues have already made an astonishing £55million at the tournament just for reaching the semi-finals, meaning the £60million transfer fee for Joao Pedro, who made his debut in the quarter-final against Palmeiras, can effectively be considered cleared.
