Six players at Sheffield Wednesday have submitted formal notices to leave the club following non-payment of wages for May and June.
The Professional Footballers' Association's chief executive Maheta Molango has condemned the situation at Hillsborough as "shocking" and "not tolerable".
The players have exercised their rights under FIFA regulations, which permit termination of contracts when salaries remain unpaid for two consecutive months.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has provided no public explanation for the delayed payments.

The Championship club is already operating under a transfer embargo with restrictions on signing new players due to previous late payments.
Manager Danny Rohl is set to depart after informing his coaching staff that he will be leaving the crisis-hit club.

The highly-rated German boss has been negotiating a severance package following two seasons at Hillsborough.
His assistant Henrik Pedersen is reportedly in line to take over as manager if he receives certain assurances about the role.
Rohl's potential exit comes as Chansiri battles to prevent a full-scale mutiny at the club.
Staff members have also not been paid, compounding the financial crisis. According to Sky Sports, Wednesday have written to players and staff apologising for the non-payment and pledging to fulfil all outstanding payments.
The English Football League cannot intervene to resolve the wage crisis as Chansiri owes money to multiple clubs for transfer payments and contingencies.
Southampton are understood to be due money from midfielder Shea Charles's loan fee and salary last season.

Norwich City are also owed money for centre-back Akin Famewo, who joined Sheffield Wednesday in July 2022. A payment deadline was missed again last month.
The club has already been hit with restrictions over the next three transfer windows for exceeding 30 days of late payments between July last year and June this year.
An independent commission will decide on potential punishment for non-payment of wages, but a points deduction for the forthcoming season appears inevitable.
The club's financial turmoil has left them without any scheduled pre-season friendlies despite players returning to training.

Chansiri released a statement last week claiming he was willing to sell Sheffield Wednesday but has rejected two offers.
The Thai businessman reportedly values the club at £100 million, though experts consider this figure wildly unrealistic given the current circumstances. Seven players were released when their contracts expired on 30 June.
Star midfielder Barry Bannan was offered a new deal but remains a free agent as no agreement has been reached due to the club's financial constraints.
Among those still under contract are Josh Windass, Bailey Cadamarteri and ex-Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah.
