Conor McGregor took to social media to show pictures of himself with David Beckham and his family

UFC fighter Conor McGregor encountered the former England captain whilst their luxury vessels were anchored in close proximity, documenting their meeting through social media posts on Sunday.

McGregor, who boasts 46.6 million Instagram followers, published photographs featuring himself with the football icon and described him as someone who had motivated him during his youth.

The 37-year-old former two-weight world champion hasn't competed in the Octagon for over four years, with his most recent bout ending in July 2021.

In his Instagram caption, McGregor expressed enthusiasm about finally meeting the ex-Manchester United star and his family, referring to their encounter as "yacht neighbours."

The mixed martial arts star's £2.7 million Lamborghini vessel was moored alongside Beckham's £16 million yacht, which features distinctive "Seven" lettering referencing his iconic shirt number.

Photographs shared by McGregor showed him posing with Beckham's youngest sons, Cruz, 20, and Romeo, 22, during their maritime encounter.

The former footballer, 50, had been spotted sailing along Italy's Amalfi Coast with his wife Victoria, 51, just two days prior to meeting McGregor.

McGregor documented additional aspects of his luxury holiday, posting images of his onboard dining experience featuring pizza, chips and red wine aboard his high-end vessel.

The Irishman's social media post featured effusive praise for the Beckham family, writing: "David Beckham, what a guy!

"Great to meet you and the fam finally, a big inspiration for me growing up! The Beckham dynasty, an absolute powerhouse that COMMANDS FULL RESPECT!"

McGregor has previously discussed his lifelong support for Manchester United, revealing in a 2019 FIFA interview that he purchased the club's notorious grey kit with his First Holy Communion money aged eight.

He explained his attraction to the team stemmed from their "success and winning mentality," noting he was "more a player than a watcher" during his youth but remained drawn to United's achievements.

McGregor's return to competition remains uncertain following his leg fracture during his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier, which marked his last appearance in the cage.

A planned June comeback against Michael Chandler was cancelled due to a broken toe, whilst recent speculation about his removal from the UFC roster was dismissed by president Dana White.

The fighter faced legal challenges after being found civilly liable for assaulting Nikita Hand at a Dublin hotel in December 2018, ordered to pay nearly £216,000 in compensation.

His appeal against the verdict was rejected by three Dublin judges last month, with all five grounds dismissed entirely.
