Celtic's shambolic season has taken another twist with Wilfried Nancy sacked after 33 days in charge

Celtic have sacked Wilfried Nancy after just one month in charge following a dismal run of form since arriving.

The Frenchman was announced as Celtic's new boss on December 3 and promised "exciting, attacking football".

However, having lost six of his eight matches in charge, including defeat to Rangers in the Old Firm derby at the weekend, the decision has been made the sack Nancy.

Nancy's assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, have also left the club.

Head of football operations Paul Tisdale has also been axed.

A club statement read: "Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, with immediate effect.

"The club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future.

"Wilfried's assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes.

"The club can also confirm that Paul Tisdale has left his position as Head of Football Operations. We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role.

"A further update will be provided to supporters as soon as is practical."

In total, Nancy lasted just 33 days in charge of Celtic - the shortest reign of any full-time manager at the club.

The former Columbus Crew coach had replaced Brendan Rodgers, who resigned earlier this season after falling out with the board.

Club legend Martin O'Neill had returned to Parkhead as interim manager as the club's hierarchy dithered over a full-time replacement.

It remains to be seen whether the Northern Irishman will return in a similar capacity.

The final nail in the coffin for Nancy was the 3-1 defeat to Rangers on Saturday at Parkhead.

The Hoops had gone a goal up before relinquishing control after the break, conceding three goals from throw-ins that conveyed Celtic's shoddy defensive structure.

Nancy's reign saw Celtic fail to win a single match in his first four games, including defeats to Hearts, Roma, St Mirren and Dundee United.

The Bhoys then claimed two wins in a row - Nancy's best run of form - before a further two losses to Motherwell and then Rangers at the weekend.

At the weekend, the 48-year-old had gone on an impassioned rant defending himself from media criticism.

He said: "Usually, we have four or five weeks of pre-season. I didn't have pre-season. I know why. I came, two days after I have a game. And the game that we should have won, by the way.

"So now, the reality is, before I came, I knew that if I don't win games, I'm going to be in trouble. Because this is part of the job.

"But I'm pleased to be here. I know where we are now. I'm not an underdog. I want my team to compete against any team. But with the context, I knew that this kind of situation happened. So now, as you know, I need time."

Just two days later, though, and the decision has been made the sack Nancy.
