United produced one of their best attacking performances since the appointment of Ruben Amorim 13 months ago, roared on by a home crowd still pining for the glory days of yesteryear.
But Bournemouth were better in the closing stages and, with the Red Devils shaky at the back, were able to capitalise to secure a point.
Following the match, footage has surfaced on social media showing Fernandes throwing his arms up in the air in frustration.
The United captain, speaking with Manuel Ugarte and then Casemiro, was clearly unhappy that their chance to climb to fifth in the standings passed them by.

Speaking after the match, Amorim confirmed that United players were 'disappointed' in the dressing room.
“It's really disappointing. We are really disappointed. Crazy game," he said when asked for his thoughts.
"It might look like we lost the two points in the second half but I think we lost them in the first half. We dominated and created so many chances. We had to go to half-time with a different result.
"In the end we deserved more. It was a fun game for everyone at home.
"I think we started really well. We did a very good first half. The result should be completely different.
"And then, again, I think six minutes into the second half, similar to Nottingham [Forest], we lost the concentration and they scored two goals, but we managed to get back into the game.

Eli Junior Kroupi scored late to earn Bournemouth a draw against Manchester United | PA"We score two goals again and then we have to finish the game. A throw-in in our possession, we need to think about, not to go again but to take calm and to close the game. In the end, it was a fun game.”
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola echoed those thoughts.
He said: "It had everything. Moments where you think it's a loss. Moments where you think we have this one, we are comfortable. Even at the end, at the last minute two clear chances, and I was thinking maybe win this one. It's just a point, it's not a lot in the standings, but I think we can take good and bad things from today.
"We are two teams that play quite aggressively, quite open and probably today we attacked much better than we defended. I think the second goal is a cheap goal, it's a cheap one for us to concede. The corner is not even a great header.
"I think we finished really well the first half. When we scored the 1-1, and we were feeling comfortable and we were finishing the half much better. That's why the goal we conceded just from the corner has hurt me because we were in a good moment.
"You didn't even know if we were happy finishing the game or give us one minute more."
