Details have come to light following the match between Sunderland and Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light

The BBC has received 103 formal complaints regarding its Match of the Day coverage of Sunderland's triumph against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

The Championship side knocked out the FA Cup holders with a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light on 17 January, yet viewers accused the programme of delivering coverage that was "poor/biased against Sunderland".

According to the broadcaster's fortnightly complaints report, the segment drew significant criticism after the panel failed to provide any tactical breakdown of the Black Cats' impressive win.

Instead, discussion centred on Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner's situation, leaving Sunderland supporters feeling their team's achievement had been overlooked.

The BBC has not yet publicly responded to the complaints.

During the broadcast, presenter Mark Chapman handed over to senior pundit Alan Shearer following the post-match interviews.

With fellow panellist Wayne Rooney laughing beside him, the Newcastle legend made clear his frustration with the editorial decision.

"Just to be clear, I had good analysis on Sunderland," Shearer stated.

"But by our editor's orders I've been overruled and we have to talk about Glasner."

Chapman responded playfully, suggesting Rooney had proposed a 15-minute special on iPlayer.

Shearer, grinning, reiterated: "We have to talk about Crystal Palace, just to be clear."

The panel subsequently devoted two minutes to discussing Glasner's predicament at Selhurst Park before moving directly to Leeds versus Fulham, offering no analysis of Sunderland whatsoever.

The focus on Glasner stemmed from the Palace manager's explosive post-match interview, in which he launched a scathing attack on the club's hierarchy.

The Austrian coach declared he felt "abandoned" by the board following the departure of captain Marc Guehi, whose sale had clearly left him deeply frustrated.

Rather than examining how Sunderland had managed to overcome the reigning FA Cup champions, the Match of the Day team chose to dissect Glasner's grievances with his employers.

This editorial decision meant the Black Cats' victory received no tactical examination whatsoever, despite the significance of a Championship club eliminating the holders from the competition at their home ground.

Shearer later addressed the controversy on The Rest is Football podcast, hosted by former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker.

Co-host Micah Richards recounted the on-air moment to Lineker, who had not seen the programme, before encouraging Shearer to finally deliver his Sunderland analysis.

The 55-year-old explained the circumstances behind his refusal to provide additional content.

"As I got to Manchester yesterday at 10am, and just before midnight, we were still on air, they did offer me the opportunity to go with the BBC iPlayer and put some analysis on it. I politely declined that offer," Shearer revealed.

Having departed Newcastle shortly after 7am to reach Salford by mid-morning, the late-night request proved unwelcome.
