Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench on Sunday to earn the Gunners a draw at the Emirates Stadium

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has opened up after his side's 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners went into the game hoping to claim all three points and boost their chances of reeling in Liverpool, who occupy the summit with five wins from five.

Arsenal's day got off to a nightmare start, with Erling Haaland putting City ahead in the ninth minute.

But Gabriel Martinelli proved to be Arteta's saviour, with the winger coming off the bench to dink the ball over Gianluigi Donnarumma and earn a draw.

Despite the draw, however, Arteta has admitted that he's frustrated his team weren't able to claim all three points.

"At the very least [we deserved a point]," he told the BBC.

"I'm so proud of my players, the way we played, the way we dominated almost every aspect of the game. Very disappointed not to win the game."

Arteta also lavished praise on Martinelli, too, for seizing his chance off the bench.

"Very happy, that is what they're here for. Ebs [Eze] as well with the ball he plays to Gabi, the timing of the run and the quality of the finish is unbelievable," he added.

Martinelli, meanwhile, provided his own verdict on the match.

"Of course we wanted to win the game," he admitted.

"I think we created a lot of chances during the game and were just a bit unlucky in certain moments.

"Happy with the goal but we didn't want to draw the game, we wanted to win it so let's keep working to win those ones.

"I saw Ebs [Eze] getting the ball and I tried to make eye contact with him and once the ball was open, I made the movement and it was a great ball from him. I just tried to put it in the back of the net.

"I work for those moments. I leave [selection] for the gaffer, he knows what he does. I just do my best to help this football club.

"Of course, I don't want to be on the bench. I want to play 90 minutes every single game but Arteta knows what he does, he's the gaffer and everyone trusts him. We're really happy with him."

"We play games like United and in the Champions League on Thursday and now today. The teams are like so powerful in all aspects.

"The resilience - of course, so difficult when you're not effective or high pressing and you're not effective in build up.

"Always so tough and so difficult to do it. We made some transitions.

"I think the result is fair. But in general, Arsenal were better."
