Liverpool sacked Arne Slot on Saturday after a dismal title defence

Liverpool have parted ways with head coach Arne Slot, the club announced this afternoon, bringing an end to the Dutchman's two-year tenure at Anfield.

The Merseyside club released an extensive statement confirming the 47-year-old's immediate departure whilst acknowledging the gravity of their decision.

Ownership made clear that reaching this conclusion had been far from straightforward, describing Slot's impact as "significant, meaningful and - most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves - successful."

The statement emphasised their admiration for his professionalism, noting his exceptional work ethic and expertise had reinforced their belief that he remains "a leader in his field."

Slot wasted little time in addressing supporters following the announcement, issuing a concise message through journalist Fabrizio Romano, though the Dutchman notably left out any mention of the Liverpool fans or players.

"It's been an amazing ride together with Liverpool, I am so grateful that we were able to win the league last season," the departing manager said.

The brevity of his response stood in stark contrast to the club's detailed statement, with the former Feyenoord boss choosing to focus solely on the positive memories from his time on Merseyside.

His debut campaign had seen him claim the Premier League crown whilst also being named LMA Manager of the Year, guiding Liverpool to their 20th league title.

The 2025/26 campaign represented a dramatic collapse for the Reds, who finished fifth in the table and failed to secure any silverware.

Liverpool suffered 19 defeats across all competitions throughout the season, matching their worst record since 2009/10.

Their points haul of just 60 marked the club's lowest total in a decade, representing a 24-point drop from their title-winning campaign.

This downturn came despite substantial investment the previous summer, with the club spending £446 million on new arrivals including British record signing Alexander Isak for £125 million from Newcastle United, Florian Wirtz for £116 million, and Hugo Ekitike for £70 million.

Several of these marquee additions were hampered by lengthy injury absences.

The club's statement also paid tribute to Slot's handling of the tragic death of Diogo Jota, praising the compassion and humanity he demonstrated during that period.

Ownership stressed that their decision reflected a need for a fresh approach rather than any criticism of Slot's abilities, adding that he and his family would always be welcome at Anfield.

The search for his successor is already underway, with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate after guiding the Cherries to sixth place last season.

Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoenes and Lens boss Pierre Sage have also been linked with the vacancy.
