ANALYSIS: Sports reporter Ben McCaffrey rounds up the Premier League boys in European action tonight

Ange Postecoglou's winless streak as Nottingham Forest boss continued on Thursday night, as Nottingham Forest fell to a 3-2 defeat against Danish side Midtjylland.

It wasn't the same story elsewhere, though, with both Aston Villa and Crystal Palace recording vital victories in their quest for European glory.

In Rotterdam, Unai Emery's side put a difficult first-half performance behind them to dominate the second period.

Goals from Emi Buendia, a beautiful finish into the bottom corner, and John McGinn secured the three points for the visitors.

Palace, meanwhile, continued their now 19-game unbeaten streak against Dynamo Kyiv. Goals from Daniel Munoz and Eddie Nketiah made sure the Villans took the victory home back to England.

With that being said, here's a round-up of how the Premier League teams did in Europe tonight.

Another game goes by for Postecoglou, another defeat as Nottingham Forest boss - it has been a far from ideal start for the Australian.

The game changed in a brief six-minute first-half spell. Postecoglou’s side went down in the 18th minute following a delivery in the box that the home team failed to clear.

However, Forest responded just minutes later; skipper Morgan Gibbs-White with a driving run down the right-hand side and delivering a pearler of a ball into the box where Dan Ndoye met it with vigour, scoring his second goal for the club.

But seconds after the restart, Midtjylland would restore their lead with another cross into the box, causing pandemonium among the Forest defence.

What once was such a sturdy and reliable back line feels so feeble and weak already.

A late onslaught from Forest ensued, including two offside goals from Chris Wood, but they threw too much caution to the wind and were caught on the break; a vicious and rapid counter finished expertly by Valdemar Andreasen.

With a two-goal deficit, it seemed game over - and fans were aware.

Home supporters were seen streaming out of the City Ground, but not before they could already be heard chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning” towards their new boss, who could only put his hands on his head.

A late Wood penalty halted the deficit and doubled the hope around the ground, but it was too little, too late.

They now sit on one point in their opening two Europa League games, but the big issue is Postecoglou’s woeful start to life at Nottingham. Will they rue the decision of letting Nuno Espirito Santo go? It certainly seems that way already.

It wasn’t pretty for Unai Emery’s side - similar to their recent slim Conference League victory against Bologna - but the three points are all that matters to the Villa faithful.

It was a sloppy start from the visitors. Still, they seemed to be given the upper hand when referee Rade Obrenovic was sent to the VAR monitor after Anel Ahmedhodzic was given just a yellow card for taking Ollie Watkins out. The English striker was through clear on goal - or so spectators thought.

To the surprise of many, the on-field referee stuck with his decision to give a yellow card, although it seemed a straightforward decision for the Bosnian’s dismissal.

Villa were then given a lifeline after a thunderous header from the hosts could not be stopped from crossing the line by Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot; however, it was disallowed after an innocuous foul on Matty Cash.

Despite both controversies, Villa took the upper hand in the second half, with former Norwich City playmaker Emi Buendia perfectly placing the ball into the bottom corner with a delicate shot from the edge of the box.

John McGinn secured the victory for Villa, finishing off after a driving run from Donyell Malen.

And that was enough to secure the three points for Emery. It was a night that started with goalkeeper Emi Martinez pulling out of the squad just moments before kick-off, marred by strange refereeing decisions, but ultimately decided by a fabulous Buendia goal. That will do for Villa fans.

Dynamo Kyiv 0-2 Crystal Palace

Earlier in the evening, Crystal Palace secured their first-ever European victory away from home in tremendous fashion, courtesy of goals from Daniel Munoz and Eddie Nketiah.

It was a comprehensive performance from Oliver Glasner’s side, who extended their remarkable unbeaten run in all competitions that stretches back to April.

Munoz opened the scoring for the visitors with a superb header from an awkward angle that looped over Ruslan Neshcheret in the Kyiv net. The Colombian has been a revelation since his move to Selhurst Park last season, and his form shows no sign of slowing down.

Nketiah then doubled the lead for the Eagles, building on his winning goal against Liverpool over the weekend.

But, while it was finished expertly by the English striker, it was all about Yeremy Pino, who created the goal.

The Spaniard joined the club in a £26million deal from Villarreal this summer, replacing the departing Eberechi Eze, and he truly shone tonight.

A tremendous piece of footwork to get around the defender, delivering the ball into the perfect area with the outside of his foot for Nketiah to finish it off.

If we see more of that, he will be a huge danger to Palace moving forward.

Borna Sosa was needlessly sent off 15 minutes from time after two yellow cards in three minutes - but nothing could dampen the mood of the travelling fans.

The win continues their astonishing streak they find themselves on and, despite a summer of turmoil, find themselves in a great position to go on and win yet another trophy. The Palace train goes marching on at full speed.
