The Australian is set for a sensational return to the Premier League

Ange Postecoglou has agreed to become the next manager of Nottingham Forest following the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo.

Nuno’s 21-month spell at the City Ground ended late on Monday night after a 3-0 defeat to West Ham before the international break.

The result capped a poor run that left the Portuguese coach under mounting pressure despite steering Forest to safety in his first campaign and guiding them to a seventh-place finish last term, their highest since 1995 and enough to secure a long-awaited return to European competition.

Talks are now under way with Postecoglou, 60, who Sky Sports say has now agreed to take charge. He will sign a contract until the summer of 2027.

The former Celtic and Tottenham boss' first match will be Saturday’s trip to Arsenal.

Once confirmed, the Australian would become the eighth permanent manager since Evangelos Marinakis assumed ownership of the club in 2017.

Postecoglou is out of work after being sacked by Tottenham at the end of last season.

Spurs endured a torrid domestic campaign under his leadership, finishing 17th after losing 22 of their 38 league matches, conceding 65 goals and collecting only 38 points – their lowest Premier League return.

Yet his tenure was also marked by a moment of history, as he delivered the club’s first major trophy in 17 years with victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

That triumph not only ended a long-running drought but also secured Champions League football, with Spurs describing it as “one of the club’s greatest moments.”

Postecoglou, however, was dismissed just over a fortnight later, with Thomas Frank appointed in his place.

During his two years in north London, Postecoglou initially earned plaudits for his expansive, attacking approach, but was criticised for refusing to compromise tactically amid a succession of injuries to key players.

He led Spurs to fifth in his first season before finally delivering silverware in his second.

Forest currently sit 10th after three games of the new season, but Marinakis moved quickly to change direction after a limp start.

Postecoglou’s pedigree in Europe, coupled with his reputation for bold, progressive football, has made him an attractive option as the club looks to stabilise its Premier League status while competing on two fronts.

Postecoglou’s pedigree in Europe, coupled with his reputation for bold, progressive football, has made him an attractive option as the club looks to stabilise its Premier League status while competing on two fronts.

If appointed, he would inherit a squad reshaped in recent transfer windows and expectations of continued progress after last year’s European qualification. For Forest supporters, the question is whether Postecoglou can replicate his ability to inspire short-term success while laying down a longer-term identity at a club still searching for stability.
