The Silver Arrows have shown off their new car

Mercedes have revealed their W17 challenger ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, with the Silver Arrows aiming to reclaim their position at the pinnacle of the sport.

The forthcoming season brings sweeping changes to both chassis and power unit rules, marking what is widely regarded as the most substantial regulatory overhaul in Formula 1's entire history.

For the Brackley-based outfit, these fresh regulations present a golden opportunity to move past a difficult four-year spell without championship success.

The German manufacturer last claimed silverware in 2021, and supporters will be hoping the W17 signals a return to winning ways.

Between 2014 and 2021, Mercedes enjoyed an unprecedented period of dominance, securing eight consecutive constructors' championships following the introduction of hybrid power units.

However, the team's fortunes changed dramatically when ground-effect aerodynamic rules arrived in 2022, with the Silver Arrows unable to master the technical demands of the new era.

That barren run stretched through to 2025, leaving the once-dominant squad searching for answers.

Now, with completely new power units entering the sport for the first time since Mercedes established their supremacy twelve years ago, the team's renowned engine-building capabilities have positioned them as early favourites to lead the way in this fresh chapter.

Should Mercedes deliver a competitive package, British driver George Russell stands to gain the most from the team's potential resurgence.

The 27-year-old has delivered standout performances since arriving at the squad in 2022, despite never having machinery capable of consistently fighting at the front.

Team boss Toto Wolff expressed confidence in the outfit's readiness for the new era.

"Formula 1 will undergo significant change in 2026, and we are prepared for that transition," Wolff stated. "The new regulations demand innovation and absolute focus across every area of performance."

His words reflect the team's determination to capitalise on this regulatory reset.

Before the season gets underway, teams face an extensive pre-season programme comprising three separate testing events.

The first opportunity to see the new machinery in action comes at Barcelona, where a private test runs from January 26-30 without public access.

Two further sessions take place in Bahrain during February, scheduled for the 11th to 13th and 18th to 20th of the month.

Following the conclusion of testing, teams will have a fortnight to make final preparations before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix.

The campaign begins on March 6, with qualifying on the Saturday and the first race of the season taking place on Sunday March 8.
