"It was tricky out there with the wind. It was shifting around a bit. These cars are extremely sensitive to it," said the F1 star.

"That final lap was good enough. This is a proper track when you have to go flat out. You have to be really committed and it's really enjoyable.

"We are quite quick on the straight. We have to wait to see what tomorrow will do and if there's rain around or not.

"I'm happy with qualifying. It's a big boost for the team as well and I'm excited to go racing tomorrow.

Another happy man was Christian Horner, with the Red Bull chief hailing the efforts of his side.

"A wonderful lap from Max but all credit to the team as well," he added.

"We have been tuning and optimising and we've given him a good car for qualy and he's delivered. A mighty lap at the end. He nailed that pole, which is a very special one.

"We've added a bit of performance to the car and balanced it. Max has delivered as he always does.

"Race pace looks pretty reasonable. We're running pretty trimmed out on wing. You can see we are quick down the straights and achieving our lap time in a different way to the others.

"Whether that's good or bad for tomorrow, who knows? We'll find out."

Piastri, meanwhile, was frustrated after failing to secure pole.
